Alberta Infrastructure designs, builds, manages, and maintains government-owned and operated facilities, and collaborates with other ministries to ensure that schools, hospitals, and government facilities infrastructure meet the needs of Alberta’s population. The Ministry also provides accommodation services and manages a large portfolio of owned and leased facilities while maintaining fiscal accountability and optimizing value for Albertans.

Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Planning Manager, the Junior Accommodation Planner supports the branch working along with both Strategic and Accommodation Planners with various projects and initiatives. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in interior design, architecture, or space planning who are passionate about shaping functional and inspiring work environments. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly organized, analytical, and relationship-driven professional to contribute to complex, province-wide planning initiatives that support government priorities.
This position is currently based on mobile work arrangement that will allow the candidate to work both from the office and home. The candidate is required to live in Edmonton or within reasonable commuting distance. The home base for the Branch is at the Infrastructure Building, 6950-113 Street, Edmonton Alberta.
Key Responsibilties:
- Supporting development of high-level space layouts and conceptual designs that align with client program needs and government accommodation standards.
- Applying principles of interior design and workplace strategy to optimize space functionality, flow, and user experience.
- Supporting internal teams and design consultants to review and refine layout proposals, ensuring alignment with project goals and stakeholder expectations.
- Supporting the development of long-term regional facility and accommodation plans in alignment with asset management principles.
- Identifying and recommending short-term space solutions that align with long-term strategies.
- Gathering and analyzing data to prepare lease renewal instructions, space allocation plans, and project documentation.
- Maintaining accurate project information and supporting Branch performance reporting.
- Collaborating with Strategic Planners, Asset Analytics, and Ministry clients to ensure informed and responsive planning decisions and accuracy of information.
- Engaging with external client stakeholders as requested in support of strategic objectives for Non-Government User policy implementation.
- Conducting site visits in various buildings throughout the province to support decisions for client program delivery needs as well as identify opportunities to reduce government costs associated with accommodation through lease terminations.

Qualifications
Required: University degree in Interior Design, Urban/ Regional Planning, or related, no experience required; or equivalent as described
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
For Example:
Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 3 years of experience.
Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 2 years of experience.
Related minimum 4 years of experience.
The successful candidate MUST also have:

Class 5 drivers’ licence or equivalent and ability to provide a clear driver abstract.

Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook).
Assets:

Understand and use appropriate planning tools (such as AutoCAD) and methods.

Basic understanding of workplace design principles.

Strong verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey design ideas clearly.

Experience working on group projects or in team environments (e.g., school studios, internships, volunteer work).

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks or project components.

Apply strong writing skills for creation of presentations, correspondence and executive communication.

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, space standards, and policy documents.

Familiarity with data analysis and report preparation.

Traveling will consist of 10-20% of the work schedule.
