Detailed Overview Under the general supervision of the manager and per the Cardiologist, the Cardiovascular Technologist is responsible for monitoring a patient’s ECG & hemodynamics during various invasive procedures such as heart catheterizations and angioplasties as well as specialized procedures performed in the Cardiac Catheterization laboratory including but not limited to PFO, ASD, VSD, LAA closures, TAVI, carotid angiograms and angioplasties and septal ablations. The CV Tech analyzes the information gathered during these procedures, conveys it to the Cardiologist during the procedure and generates a standard reports for each procedure. The CV Tech maintains equipment as required; assists in setting up and calibrating the equipment for each procedure.
Responsibilities 01. Prepares patient for procedure by applying electrodes and shave prep if necessary. 02. Gathers patient information/history from patient and Meditech EMR, MUSE and the provincial Cardiac Registry (HeartIS); enters orders in Meditech; prepares information for the patient chart. 03. Sets up, calibrates, monitors and analyzes the patient’s ECG & hemodynamics during the various procedures; conveys vital information and any changes to the physician. 04. Enters data and prepares reports, with analysis of recorded hemodynamics including ejection fraction, coronary disease, Resistances and calculation of valve gradient and area. 05. Sets up, maintains, calibrates, troubleshoots a variety of equipment: physiological data monitoring system, ACT machine, FICK machine, defibrillator. 06. Maintains records for Provincial Cardiac registry (HeartIS). 07. Prepares related paperwork for STEMI cases. 08. Assists in pulling supplies for cases; setting up procedural trays using sterile technique; prepping of patients as required. 09. Under the direction of the physician - participates in defibrillating, external pacing and occasional cardioversion and CPR as required. 10. Other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience Diploma in Cardiovascular Technology. Two (2) years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Eligible for registration with the Canadian Association of Cardiology Pulmonary Technologists (CACPT) and /or CCI RCIS (Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist) credential.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal effectively with others.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Ability to organize work.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
