The Portfolio Manager will be responsible for managing OCIO client portfolios amongst other things. This position will work with external stakeholders (investment managers, custodians, etc.) as well as partner with internal stakeholders (compliance, investment operations, consultants, etc.) to ensure the effective management of OCIO clients.
Responsibilities
Portfolio Management
- Establish the client investment strategy based on the Statement of Investment Policies and Procedures (SIPP) and discussions with the client and the investment consultant;
- Develop Investment Policy Statements (IPSs);
- Review client’s SIPP;
- Review and approve client portfolio implementation and transition plans;
- Update and review client KYC information and suitability on a regular basis;
- Select investment managers and complete required agreements on behalf of clients;
- Replace, terminate and/or add investment managers as necessary;
- Work with approved external liability-driven (LDI) investment managers to define clients’ LDI strategy and target allocation;
- Assist with the management of the external investment managers relationship which includes:
- Negotiating agreements and preferential fees;
- Meeting with them on a regular basis to review the strategies clients are invested in;
- Acting as the day-to-day contact.
- Work with investment consultants to identify appropriate client asset mixes;
- Assist in the development of model portfolios for the OCIO investment platform;
- Monthly review of client asset mix to ensure it is consistent with IPS/SIPP guidelines;
- Review and approve client daily cash monitoring, including forecasted cash flows;
- Review and approve client trade calculations and instructions letters;
- Address portfolio management related questions from clients;
- Participate in client meetings as required.
Performance Measurement and Attribution
- Review and approve the performance calculation of the firm’s Alternative strategies fund;
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of investment managers and report to clients as to if they are
- performing according to expectations;
- Prepare quarterly performance commentaries;
- Participate in various ad hoc performance analysis.
Investment research
- Participate in manager research;
- Participate in other topical investment research.
Miscellaneous
- Participate in client proposals and RFPs;
- Develop and maintain portfolio management controls and procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Actuarial Science or related field;
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in an investment management or consulting firm;
- Registered as an Advising Representative or possess the required experience and proficiency to be registered as an Advising Representative with the Canadian Securities Administrators upon joining;
- Experience dealing with institutional clients, an asset;
- Experience with actuaries, consultants, an asset;
- Understanding of pension plan liabilities and liability-driven strategies, an asset;
- Experience with portfolio management systems;
- Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word);
- Advanced Excel skills (e.g. macros), an asset;
- Bilingual (English and French), strongly preferred;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Strong attention to details;
- Ability to think strategically and implement changes and/or improve processes;
- Ability to analyze problems, determine and implement appropriate solutions for complex client and business issues.
