The CNSC Legal Services is a team of 12legal and administrative experts who provide timely legal support and advice to CNSC employees on the interpretation and application of the Nuclear Safety and Controls Act and other legislation; advice on bills, regulations, licenses, agreements/arrangements, and regulatory documents; and support in the management of legal risks.

You are a bilingual paralegal with a solid educational background and experience in providing legal support in advisory or litigation contexts. Your expertise includes conducting legal research, drafting various legal documents, and managing records efficiently. You have knowledge of Canadian legal processes, research methodologies and electronic databases, which equips you to navigate through legal information effectively.
What you’ll do:
As part of the Legal Services team you would be reporting to the General Counsel of Legal Services.
In this role you will utilize your bilingual proficiency and legal expertise to provide comprehensive paralegal support within a federal government organization.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing support to legal counsel, including the Senior General Counsel and General Counsel, across a broad range of legal functions, including advisory and litigation support and regulatory drafting
- Conducting legal research and preparing summaries or memos of the results.C
- Contributing to the preparation of court filings, certified tribunal records, coordinating document service and conducting corporate searches Assisting in the development of regulatory instruments, performing preliminary assessments of ATIP requests, and provide legal input on corporate reports and briefing materials
- Act as a resource for the CNSC’s Litigation Readiness and Business Continuity Planning, ensuring legal operations are proactive, compliant, and well-coordinated
- Managing legal records and files according to the established file structure
Essential Qualifications:
Education:
Successful completion of post-secondary education according to provincial standards; a Paralegal diploma or an acceptable combination of law-related education, training and/or experience to be eligible for licensing by the Law Society of Ontario.
Language Requirements:
Bilingual imperative with a proficiency at CBC level. If you are unsure of your proficiency level, we encourage you to take a self-assessment here.
Experience:

Providing paralegal support in an advisory or litigation context

Conducting legal research and analysis and preparing summaries of the results

Drafting legal or court documents (affidavits, notices, pleadings, contracts, etc.) or preparing briefing materials.

Managing records, such as compiling and filing court documents or tribunal records or managing legal information holdings (i.e., collections of opinions/precedents)

Liaising with legal teams, clients, and/or courts on litigation matters
Knowledge of:

The statutory mandate of the CNSC

Various research methodologies and electronic databases such as QuickLaw, WestLaw, CanLII, SOQIJ, etc.

Records and legal document management systems used in government/legal environments.

Court and tribunal processes and procedures across multiple jurisdictions.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Draft clear, concise legal documents, reports, and case summaries, while analyzing legal issues to develop recommendations
- Coordinate multiple legal files and prioritize competing tasks effectively
- Communicate complex legal concepts to both legal and non-legal stakeholders

Asset Qualification:
- A diploma from an accredited paralegal program in Ontario
- Experience working in a legal services team within the federal government
- Experience administering oaths, declarations or affirmations, or commissioning affidavits or certifying documents
- Experience providing support on ATIP requests
- Experience performing corporate searches
- Knowledge of information processes within the Government of Canada, including electronic information, classification standards and security procedures.
- Knowledge of administrative, environmental, Indigenous, and constitutional law
- Familiarity with regulatory drafting or contributing to legislative/regulatory development
Operational Needs:
All CNSC staff are subject to the Mobility Directive
This position requires occasional travel
Hours of Work: Anywhere between 7:30 am ET to 6pm ET
Overtime: Overtime may be required.
