About the role

THEATRE ANDAUDIOVISUAL TECHNICIAN

St. Clement's School is looking for a full-time Theatre and Audio Visual (“AV”) Technician (“Theatre Technician”) to join our team. This dynamic, hands-on position is ideal for someone passionate about theatre production. The Theatre and AV Technician is responsible for the planning and oversight of the technical aspects of performance events. This includes faculty-directed theater curricular events, student events and productions, guest speaker engagements, and rental activities.

This role involves the setup, operation, and maintenance of Powell Hall Theatre and other event spaces in the School. Powell Hall is a multi-functional space that serves not only as a performance space, but also a teaching classroom and hands-on learning environment for our students. The Technician also trains staff and students in technical theatre and AV operations. The scope of this role may expand based on the candidate's skills and interests..

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all technical aspects of school theatre productions and events, including lighting, sound, video, and stage management;
  • Operate and maintain theatre equipment including lighting consoles, soundboards, video switchers, and AV systems;
  • Assist staff and students with theatrical design/ conceptualization, technical implementation, production organization/ management, the design process, programming, installing/operating tech, and coordinating meetings as needed;
  • Train staff and students in the operation of theatre and broadcast technology including oversight during productions as needed;
  • Ensure the theatre is clean, safe, and ready for use by staff, students, and external groups, with the help of our Facilities team;
  • Collaborate with the Facilities Manager to complete health and safety checks for the theatre; participate as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee;
  • Manage theatre inventory and liaise with the Director of IT on budget and equipment upgrades;
  • Liaise with and assist the IT Department for AV support for all events at SCS. This includes events outside of the theatre such as school assemblies, classroom guest speakers, and events held in school venues such as the Cafeteria, including managing rental technical equipment when necessary;
  • Operate Zoom and other virtual platforms for remote school events managing distribution of links and technical meeting setup (e.g. breakout groups, waiting room, etc.);
  • Additional responsibilities will be assigned based on the qualifications and experience of the incumbent; and
  • Flexibility in working hours is essential; evening and weekend work will be required, and the schedule may shift based on event and production needs.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent in a related field;
  • Experience with lighting setup, rigging, and operation;
  • Proficient in digital sound consoles, equalizers, delay units, and audio peripherals;
  • Skilled in multi-channel audio recording, mixing, and mastering;
  • Knowledge of video production including switching, projection, capture, editing, post-production, and live streaming;
  • Familiarity with video signals (analog and digital) and video switchers;
  • Understanding of gain structure, microphone placement, speaker setup, equalization, and dynamic processing;
  • Completion of safety training including working at heights and MEWP;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; adaptable, and able to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Effective organizational, time management, and project coordination abilities; and
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations in performance environments.
