About the role

Position Title: Mentor, ROYA Program

Organization: HerStory Initiative Society

Location: Canada, remote

Commitment: Part-time (2-5 hours/week) starting September, 2025

Compensation: Volunteer (unpaid)

Reports to: Program Manager, ROYA

About HerStory Initiative Society:

HerStory Initiative Society is a youth-led, Afghan women-centered nonprofit organization based in Vancouver, Canada. It is committed to amplifying the voices, stories, and educational aspirations of Afghan girls and women who have been impacted by conflict and displacement. Through digital storytelling, mentorship, and advocacy, HerStory offers a platform for Afghan girls to share their lived experiences and reclaim agency over their narratives.

To date, HerStory’s core focus has been on storytelling—through initiatives such as InTheirWords and NexusTalk —with the aim of humanizing the Afghan experience and fostering cross-cultural understanding. As the organization evolves, it is expanding its programming to include educational support and access initiatives.

About ROYA:

ROYA is an international mentorship and advocacy program that supports Afghan girls and women in accessing higher education opportunities in Canada. Through individualized application support and mentorship, ROYA empowers Afghan youth to pursue academic freedom and build meaningful futures. Position Overview:

Mentors are at the heart of the ROYA Program, providing one-on-one guidance to Afghan girls and women navigating the Canadian university application process for the first time. As a Mentor, you will offer personalized support in areas such as program selection, application writing, scholarship research, and interview preparation. This is a remote, part-time, and unpaid volunteer role ideal for individuals passionate about educational equity, mentorship, and refugee advocacy. Mentors will work closely with Mentees from September 2025 to January 2026, helping them pursue academic freedom and build a brighter future.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mentee Support

  • Maintain active communication with Mentees, responding to queries and offering application support through email and video communication tools to assist with the following: school and program selection, application writing, scholarship research and application writing, interview preparation

  • Set goals and timelines to assist Mentees with ongoing applications and develop mentee-specific application strategies

  • Tracks and reports application progress and challenges to the ROYA Manager throughout the duration of the program

  • Training & Development

  • Available to attend virtual training sessions at the end of August 2025 (approximately 3 hours total)

Qualifications :

  • Required:

  • Experience with applying to university programs and scholarship opportunities

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Familiarity with the Canadian university application process

  • Sensitivity to the cultural and educational challenges faced by refugees and displaced populations

  • Ability to structure project timelines and work independently with Mentees

  • Preferred:

  • Proficiency with tools like Outlook and Teams
