Career Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager of Warehousing & Distribution, the incumbent supports the Area Supervisor in the daily operations of their assigned work location(s). This involves ensuring appropriate materials management practices and principles are in place to protect the TTC’s assets while providing the materials and parts necessary to support ongoing operations. The Assistant Areas Supervisor will be responsible for coordinating, supporting and ensuring the safety of all Material Management employees. In addition responsibilities include: traveling & auditing the various TTC Material Management locations across multiple shifts, ensuring the security of the stores areas; ensuring the state of good repair of materials management facility and equipment; ensuring completion of various monthly reports; training of material management employees, coordinating workforce labour and performing other related duties as assigned.
What You Will Do
As Assistant Area Supervisor, you will assist in the daily operation of the assigned work location(s) on various shifts to ensure inventory parts are stocked, stored and distributed on a daily basis to meet the needs of the user departments throughout the TTC.
Your role will entail monitoring and coordinating labour for hourly-rated Storepersons/Senior Storepersons in conducting the daily routines of shipping, receiving, issuing and maintaining records using the ERP System. Recommending CI improvements and/or new methods of work by keeping current with the latest techniques, materials and equipment; devising plans and/or justification for the application of any recommendations to the operations or functions of the assigned work location
The selected incumbent will be liaising with Materials Management Department staff, shop management and contract staff regarding the delivery and pickup of numerous types of parts for emergency purposes and in order to protect TTC’s assets while ensuring that vehicle operation (deliveries/pickups) is performed in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and related applicable legislation
Your role will include monitoring input transactions made to the ERP System by employees are timely, accurate and complete in addition to ensuring appropriate daily cycle count audits for stock are performed on a timely basis and liaising directly with the Operations Branch supervisory & management staff in dealing with daily issues in order to meet their work schedules, and arranging for parts required to support these special needs
As Assistant Are Supervisor, you will be responsible for monitoring inventory and performance targets by tracking days of supply, fill rate (shelf life), time dated material, etc. Create maintain and distribute monthly KPI reports for warehousing & distribution
You will be supporting the scheduling of trucks to pick up and deliver material to various TTC locations (e.g. bus garages, carhouses, etc.) and ensure the receiving, counting, stocking and managing all rebuilt parts while supporting the day-to-day activities of Senior Storepersons, Storepersons and apprentices
The incumbent will motivate, and train assigned staff, ensuring teamwork and high standards of work quality and organizational performance
You will be on call for weekend/holiday coverage as required
Your job will require you to recommend improvements and/or new methods of work by keeping current with latest techniques, materials and equipment; devising plans and/or justification for the application of any recommendations to the operations or functions while ensuring the security of the assigned work area by ensuring doors are locked and alarm systems are activated when, and as required
In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining discipline and promoting harmony in the section; ascertaining facts to resolve grievances including but not limited to investigating various injuries, accidents, incidents or other problems which may arise, and initiating corrective action or making recommendations and ensuring that rules and regulations originating in the Collective Agreement, TTC and departmental policies, and Government Legislation
You will be responsible for making recommendations regarding the selection of new employees, upgrading or progression of probationary employees, and the downgrading or dismissal of unsuitable employees

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
- Completion of post-secondary education (Community College Diploma or University Degree) in a relevant discipline, or the equivalent with progressively responsible experience in job related functions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of materials management and materials handling principles, methods and practices relating to the ordering, receiving, issuing, storing and management of materials
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills along with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to provide guidance and direction to a unionized workforce is required
- Experience responding to day-to-day issues that may arise concerning scanning issues
- Must be familiar with PCs and relevant computer applications (e.g. IFS, SAP)
- Ability to motivate and assess a skilled unionized workforce
- Must become thoroughly conversant with all aspects of the TTC’s Stores operations, including inventory management, purchasing procedures and materials stocked relating to the operation of the assigned work location
- Must have or acquire working knowledge of bar coding
- A valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and will be required to use own automobile to travel to various locations
- Availability for on call coverage as required and ability to report to various work locations and shifts intermittently as required
- Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
TTC Specific Requirements:
- Must have or must acquire knowledge of departmental policies and procedures applicable to the work performed
- Must have or rapidly acquire a thorough knowledge of the ATU, Local 113 Collective Agreement and Maintenance Seniority Regulations and relevant government legislation or regulations
- The incumbent will also be required to complete various courses in effective supervision, and other courses related to the work
