Our Occupational Health & Safety Office is seeking a Safety Specialist under the direction of the Manager, Safety Communications, to carry out safety analysis, reporting and engagement initiatives while providing administrative and communication support, including compiling, inputting, tracking, analyzing, and reporting on a variety of data/information, drafting communication products, responding to inquiries, and engaging with stakeholders for program coordination.
What will I be doing?
- Conduct conformance and compliance analyses to determine areas of opportunity and strategies for improvement on the topic of safety culture.
- Contribute to internal reports and proofreads business reports.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders in relation to safety programs / safety engagement, and any relevant area that encourages and propels the enterprise’s strategic objectives. Maintain consistent, effective and engaging communication with stakeholders.
- Establish a baseline measurement for Metrolinx’s safety culture that includes relevant determinants.
- Conduct meetings with internal business units in relation to safety engagement / communication to implement a culture of safety and industry best practices with safety.
- Maintain a positive and productive working relationship with staff and management across Metrolinx.
- Create content, manage digital and traditional communication channels, and help to build and maintain a culture of safety (SharePoint, Canva, Safety Central, Viva Engage, etc).
- Organize, lead and support the implementation of safety programs and initiatives for all employees, and when applicable, for members of the public and contractors (Rail Safety Week, October Healthy Workplace Month, Health and Safety Week, etc.) .
- Support the manager in daily operations, providing essential backup and assistance as needed.
- Conduct reviews to develop independent resources on safety engagement / programs in alignment with relevant and industry best practices / standards on the advancement and promotion of safety culture.
- Support the development to build a common framework for the management and assessment of safety culture into rail, rapid transit, subway systems, stations, corporate offices, etc.
- Perform other relevant tasks as assigned.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Communications, Business Administration, Marketing, or a relevant field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience in a quick-paced environment.
- Project Management Experience is an asset.
- Strong safety background or experience would be considered an asset.
- A valid Class “G” driver’s license in good standing is required.
- Ability to present and persuasively communicate at all levels of the business and to external stakeholders.
- A team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Decisive, methodical, dependable, responsive, trustworthy problem solver and evaluator.
- Proven track record of maintaining and protecting confidential data in high-stakes environments.
- Flexible to accommodate to shifting priorities.
- Project coordination experience to simultaneously monitor progress of multiple safety engagement projects.
- Experience gathering and analyzing business requirements.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Technically competent in all Microsoft programs (MS Word and PowerPoint), SharePoint, Design and Canva.
- Digital experience creating communication campaigns across various platforms (video editing is a strong asset).
- May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for safety engagement tours or site visits.
- May be required to work evening and weekends to respond to emergencies.
