About the role

Geriatrician/Care of the Elderly Physician (200-1676)

The Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) Department of Geriatrics has an opening for a full time Geriatrician based in Duncan to join a team of 11 Geriatricians working across Vancouver Island.

The Cowichan District Hospital, a 148-bed acute care facility, enjoys an exceptionally collegial atmosphere amongst the general and specialty medical staff.

As part of the interdisciplinary team, the successful candidate will work with a geriatric psychiatrist, family physicians, and local medical specialists, as well as liaising with Home and Community Care teams.

The successful candidate will provide inpatient consultation to patients in the Cowichan District Hospital up to 2 days per week, working with an RN functioning as a Seniors Nurse Consultant within the hospital. The hospital is set to expand to 182-204 beds by 2026 and there is opportunity to become involved in the design of seniors services in this exciting new hospital. There is a growing interdisciplinary team, including an Nurse Practitioner, OT, and RN in an outpatient setting 3 days per week. This will include providing service as a part of Geriatric Specialized Service.

Cowichan District Hospital is affiliated with the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Island Medical Program. Involvement in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching program is encouraged. A UBC affiliated appointment and membership in the Department of Geriatrics may be available.

May be eligible for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA) including:

  • Recruitment Incentive: $10,000 (full-time)
  • Relocation Costs Reimbursement: up to $15,000 (amount based on location relocating from)
  • Fee Premium: 4.20%
  • Annual Flat Fee: $6,508.80
  • Rural CME: starting at $3000/annum in year 3 & 4 to a maximum of $6,00.00/annum after 4 years.
