Williams Operating Corporation - Barrick Gold located near Marathon in Northwestern Ontario presently requires a: Underground Operations Manager Position Description The Underground Operations Manager is accountable for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of all underground mining activities. This includes oversight of both internal crews and external contractors performing development, production, backfill, and support services. This role requires strong leadership, operational planning, and contractor management skills to ensure that underground operations are aligned with safety standards, production targets, and corporate objectives. The successful candidate will play a key role in fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement across the site.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strong leadership to underground teams and contractors, fostering a culture of safety, performance, and collaboration across all operational areas.
  • Champion a proactive safety culture by leading inspections, risk assessments, and investigations, and ensuring accountability to site safety expectations.
  • Oversee the safe execution of all underground activities—including development, production, backfilling, and support services—ensuring alignment with mine plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Collaborate with Mine Engineering, Geology, and Maintenance to ensure efficient and integrated execution of operational plans.
  • Manage contractor performance to ensure deliverables are met, site standards and regulatory requirements are followed, and issues related to scope, scheduling, or compliance are resolved promptly.
  • Support mine planning, budgeting, and reporting processes; monitor KPIs; and implement improvement strategies to optimize productivity and cost-efficiency.
  • Identify and advance continuous improvement initiatives, including the adoption of new technologies, improved mining methods, and feedback-driven innovation.
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget for the underground operations including fixed plant, electrical, shaft, and support services.
  • Lead daily, weekly, and monthly meetings to ensure alignment with the 7/21 plan, 3-month plan, and annual budget targets. This includes taking ownership of monthly operations scrums, weekly KPI reviews, and continuous improvement meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in underground mining operations, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Sound understanding of Ontario underground mining regulations and statutory responsibilities.
  • Strong background in contractor management.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams in a high pressure environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and SAP, with the ability to analyze data, develop presentations, and support operational planning and reporting.
  • Experience with mine planning and mine design – ability to communicate clearly with both operations and technical services personnel to ensure optimal outcomes for the mine.
