About the role

Team Rubicon Canada (TR Canada) is veteran-led humanitarian organization, built to serve global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises. Our people, known as Greyshirts, are the cornerstone of our mission and success. We are committed to fostering an environment that embodies the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEI&B)—inclusive of beliefs, cultural backgrounds, job experiences, thoughts, and ideas—across all aspects of our operations.

We are seeking a Director, Field Operations. You are a bold, strategic leader with deep experience in disaster response and humanitarian operations. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will drive national operations and field readiness, lead a high-performing team, and ensure TR Canada’s Greyshirts are trained, equipped, and empowered to serve. As Director, you’ll be responsible for scaling TR Canada’s operational capacity, strengthening volunteer engagement, and reinforcing our leadership in Canada’s emergency management ecosystem.

The right person is a self-starter, and team player with excellent oral and written communication experience and skills. Our culture requires individuals foolish enough to think they can change the world and competent enough to have a chance. Every day is a challenge, but every month brings new opportunities. This position can be hybrid or remote with some travel required.

Duties:

  • Lead all domestic and international field operations, from readiness to demobilization, ensuring operational excellence, safety, and mission success.
  • Coordinate HQ departments and the Emergency Operations Centre in support of deployed operations.
  • Build, mentor, and manage a national Field Leadership Cadre to deliver consistent, culturally aligned volunteer experiences.
  • Oversee the Annual Training Plan, logistics systems, and volunteer readiness in alignment with TR Canada’s strategy and growth.
  • Develop and sustain trusted relationships with emergency management stakeholders and external partners.
  • Guide monthly volunteer leadership engagements and coach HQ staff in effective volunteer-facing practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Operating Officer.

Experience and Background

  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Business, Emergency Management, Public Policy); advanced degrees or senior military education considered assets.
  • Experience : 12+ years of progressive experience in military, non-profit, humanitarian, or disaster response operations with national or international scope.
  • Certifications : ICS 300/400 preferred; additional emergency management or leadership certifications an asset.
  • Proven track record leading large-scale operations in high-stakes environments; developing people and teams; driving cross-functional coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to align field operations with organizational strategy and culture.
  • Proven ability to engage stakeholders, present complex information clearly, and build consensus.
  • Skilled in planning, financial stewardship, and performance reporting.
  • Experience leading or enabling volunteers in dynamic environments is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity working with government departments or emergency management agencies is an asset.
  • Veteran or First Responder experience is highly valued.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional experience with Asana Project Management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Passion for the mission and values of Team Rubicon Canada.
