About the role

Position Summary

Regular Part-Time Support Staff, replacement position

(First consideration for support staff and academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective collective agreements)

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Early Childhood Educator plans and implements a quality early childhood education program for children, assists in supporting students enrolled in ECE-related programs, models the philosophy and Program Statement of the ECE-related programs, and develops and maintains professional relationships with families. The successful candidate is responsible for upholding the Care for Newcomer Children Requirements (CNCR) and the Staff Handbook guidelines. The Early Childhood Educator will have the opportunity to support a diverse group of children and families who are newcomers to Canada.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work on-site at the Care for Newcomer Children Centre located at 108 University Ave. E, in Waterloo. The Early Childhood Educator will be regularly scheduled to work 15-24 hours per week, and the hours of work are Monday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., and Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Some exceptions to these hours include an annual three-week closure and a reduction to 15 hours per week in the month of July.

Responsibilities

  • Supports a rich relationship-based program that supports all areas of development, while fostering a strong sense of belonging in addition to nurturing each child’s well-being in our care for children ages 6 months to 4 years old
  • Embraces play as a foundational piece of our curriculum through a constructivist approach to learning and development aligned with How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years
  • Communicates effectively with children, families, and members of the community for whom English is not their first language
  • Knowledgeable in the importance of dual language learning for newcomer children
  • Ensures that the basic needs of children are met, including health and safety
  • Provides ongoing supervision of all play areas and all activities/routines that occur
  • Communicates respectfully with parents and ensures that messages are passed on to both parents, and other staff
  • Ensures that any unusual situations are shared with Supervisor
  • Attends staff meetings, contributes to team discussions, and participates in professional development that is made available

Qualifications

  • Two-year diploma in Early Childhood Education is required
  • Experience working in the early years sector is required
  • Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) in good standing with no terms, conditions, and limitations is required
  • Standard First Aid and CPR training is required
  • Completion of a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check is required
  • Ability to comply with immunization requirements
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good time management and organization skills
  • Creative and flexible; able to participate in solving problems
  • Fluency in more than one language is considered an asset
