Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the one (1) permanent full time and one (1) permanent part time position as Traffic Support with Halifax Regional Police, Traffic Support.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Completes motor vehicle accident reports for people who walk in to the station and generates an incident number on Versadex including the reports pertaining to the circumstances of the accident and the entity information about the people and vehicles involved.
  • Releases stolen and/or seized vehicles to registered owners after reading Versadex files, ensuring all applicable paperwork has been filed and authorized
  • Collects all relevant paperwork and monies from customers in relation to the withdrawal process of applicable Summary Offense Tickets
  • Collects monies and processes the appropriate release of completed accident report packages to individuals and representatives of parties involved in motor vehicle accidents
  • Accepts responsibility for large volumes of monies, processing various revenue streams; balances daily batches and prepares bank deposits
  • Ensures that transactions and end of day balancing and deposits are completed accurately
  • Provides applicable and timely information to persons making inquiries at front counter or on phone
  • Other related administrative duties as required

SECTION SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Motor Vehicle Accidents

  • Reviews all motor vehicle accident (MVA) reports for errors or missing information and order reports for proper filing.

Summary Offense Tickets (SOTs):

  • Processes e-SOTs from a transcription queue to the Versadex System by confirming information on the e-SOT and making all necessary modifications.

Seized Vehicles

  • Prepares Registry of Motor Vehicles Seizure applications based on the reading of seized Motor Vehicle Files, the subsequent research of driver and vehicle information in Versadex and JEIN (always in consultation with the Sergeant i/c Traffic Support) who is the signing authority for the application.

Court Disclosure

  • Prepares and types all legal documents that formally charge (court informations) an individual by reviewing files and obtaining the correct charge to fit the crime that is committed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Completion of post-secondary Business or Administrative certificate or equivalent experience.
  • Two years office experience in a busy environment with a focus on customer service
  • Two years’ experience in handling volumes of cash; including balancing and preparing bank deposits
  • Proficient skills in keyboarding, data entry, dictatyping and standardized filing
  • Familiarity with court terminology, police related environment or similar environment pertaining to the Traffic Section processes is considered an asset.

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standardized office procedures and processes, proficient keyboarding skills, data entry, filing and file management, document organization, as well as letter and memo composition, normally acquired through previous office/word processing experience.
  • General knowledge of basic accounting functions, in relation to cash handling ie cash balancing, preparing bank deposits, and security procedures.
  • Ability to reference the Criminal Code the Motor Vehicle Act, Halifax Regional Police Standard Operational Policies and Procedures,
  • Demonstrates a high level of communications to quickly build rapport with clients and the general public; interact empathetically and supportively with the public on a face-to-face basis; manage inquiries and provide information in a tactful, sensitive and diplomatic manner; handle language barriers; recognize and defuse unpleasant or difficult contacts; and to represent the police service in a positive, professional manner.
  • Working knowledge of common office software including, not limited to: Microsoft Word, and Excel
  • Knowledge of Versadex and JEIN, an asset.

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Candidates being considered for the position of Traffic Support must successfully meet the security clearance requirements administered by Halifax Regional Police.

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Permanent full-time. This is an NSGEU 222 bargaining unit position.

HOURS OF WORK: Hours of work are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (35 hours per week for full time and 20 hours per week for part time), in an office environment. No on-call work is a required for this position but from time to time, incumbents may have to work overtime.

SALARY: Level 4, NSGEU Local 222, $28.41 hourly.

WORK LOCATION: 1975 Gottingen Street, Halifax, NS B2J 2H1. Work location can be changed according to operational requirements.
