Job Profile
The City of Cambridge has a temporary opening for Municipal By-Law Compliance Officer in the Municipal By-law Compliance Division, Corporate Services Department available immediately. Reporting to the Supervisor of Municipal By-Law Compliance, the following duties will apply:
What you will be doing
- Provides the public, and other interested individuals, information and assistance on related areas of enforcement including City by-laws and policies, Provincial Acts and regulations and other information as appropriate.
- Inspects properties, vehicles, buildings and businesses to ensure their use is in conformance with designated by-laws (i.e. Lot Maintenance, noise, licensing, sign, and Traffic/parking).
- Manually and electronically ensures complete and detailed documentation including record of facts, taking photographic evidence, of all investigations in sufficient detail to support prosecution, including uploading of photos/evidence to AMANDA investigation file or other case management software.
- Providing interpretation of related by-laws, legislation as well as keeping current on by-laws/regulations. When appropriate issues notice of contraventions, orders, tickets or fines for violations of city by-laws or Provincial Acts in conformity with related legislation.
- When necessary to execute an order, provide direction to all contractors including scheduling and overseeing work.
- Liaises with outside agencies and perform joint inspections where required.
- Attends Provincial Offences Court and hearings on behalf of the City to present evidence in court proceedings and assists legal counsel with preparation of court documents required for prosecution of violations.
- Patrol assigned areas on foot and in vehicle in all weather conditions.
- Adhere to a strict code of confidentiality, incidental to all division investigations.
- Wears a city uniform and operates a marked city vehicle.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
- Two-year College Diploma in Police Foundations/Law and Security or related discipline.
- Municipal Law Enforcement Foundations course and Ontario Association of Property Standards Training would be considered an asset
Experience and Knowledge
- A minimum of one to two years of related work experience
- Valid “G” Driver’s License required, with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (4 or less demerit points may be considered acceptable)
- Knowledge of City By-laws and relevant legislation
- Communication skills to advise the public of violations, providing assistance and direction
- Good organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload
- Knowledge of Court Room decorum and procedures
Hours of Work
The regular hours of work will be scheduled on a continental rotating shift as scheduled by the supervisor. Shifts are 11 hours long (10 hours paid with a 1-hour unpaid lunch) and cover 7 days a week 24 hours a day(35 hours per week). Regular hours of work and shifts subject to change at the discretion of the Supervisor of Municipal By-law Enforcement.

Valid G driver's license.
Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer)
Current and valid Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.
Your compensation
This position is within Grade 8 of the inside workers union salary schedule and has an hourly range of $41.32 - $43.92. We offer a comprehensive benefits package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.
