POSITION SUMMARY:

We are currently seeking an experienced human resource professional with advanced leadership and interpersonal skills to join our organization as Director, Human Resources. In this position, you will manage the development, implementation, and day-to-day administration of a full range of human resource programs, services, policies, systems, and processes. The Director, Human Resources is responsible for executing the HR Strategic Plan and providing leadership and support in all human resource matters. In this key role, you will support high levels of employee engagement and a culture of teamwork and commitment to service excellence.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Managing, administering and delivering a full range of HR services including recruitment, new employee orientation and onboarding, performance management, compensation and benefits, employee relations, training and development, and succession planning collaborating with department heads to ensure the effective implementation and application of HR policies, services and related initiatives.
  • Assisting senior management with developing and maintaining a respectful, safe and healthy workplace environment where managers and employees are supported to do their jobs to the best of their ability.
  • Ensuring the HR Policy Manual is compliant with relevant laws and regulations; makes recommendations for revisions, and implements changes as required.
  • Advising and assisting management on interpreting and applying HR policies, programs and best practices
  • Supporting managers in addressing employee issues including performance, discipline, terminations, leave, and accommodation matters.
  • Providing expertise, coaching and support to assist managers and employees in successful resolution of workplace issues and conflicts.
  • Managing the employee dispute resolution/grievance process including undertaking fact finding investigations, etc. as may be required.
  • Communicating HR policies, programs, services, and initiatives across the organization to support awareness, understanding and compliance.
  • Undertaking organizational structure and staffing reviews with a view to proactively identify opportunities to optimize resources and service levels in all areas of the organization.
  • Managing HR related projects and initiatives including scope, planning, communication, implementation and budget management.
  • Developing and implementing attraction and retention strategies and initiatives to attract, develop and retain talent.
  • Working directly with the Band Administrator and managers to identify and implement individual and group training and development activities, including health and safety, respectful workplace, and other capacity building initiatives.
  • Supporting the development of managers and directors in areas such as performance management, recruitment, employee development, employee engagement, and conflict resolution.
  • Developing and maintaining an accurate and secure HR records management system including personal, performance and compensation information.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of HR programs and services through the collection and analysis of related data, identifying opportunities for improvement, and making sound business case recommendation as may be required.
  • Other related duties as may be required from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate for the position will have a university degree majoring in HR and 7 to 10 years of progressive HR experience including a minimum of 3 years management experience reporting to the executive level, preferably within a First Nations organization. A CPHR/CHRP designation is preferred. Consideration will be given to candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Broad and deep working knowledge, skills and abilities in HR management and administration.
  • An understanding of First Nations culture and traditions; related work experience is preferred.
  • Advanced analytical, organizational skills including time management and planning.
  • Advanced communication skills including:
    • Written: policy, reports, letters, presentations, and other HR related material; and,
    • Verbal: communicating respectfully and effectively at all levels of the organization whether with individuals or groups.
  • Commitment to maintaining current knowledge of employment law, federal and provincial regulations, and HR best practices.
  • Advanced interpersonal, coaching and problem solving skills.
  • A commitment to providing timely and supportive internal customer service.
  • Ensuring confidentiality and managing sensitive issues with professionalism and respect for the privacy and rights of others.
  • Intermediate, computer skills including HRIS, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media platforms, and other applications that facilitate efficiency.
  • Building collaborative and effective internal and external working relationships.

Salary Range: $95,859 – $113,113
