JOB TITLE: Part-time Community Support Worker
JOB SITE: Norland Place Supportive Housing
REPORTS TO: Program Manager, Norland Place Supportive Housing
EMPLOYEE CATEGORY: Part-time, Permanent
SALARY RANGE: Grid 33– HEU – Community Subsector
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field such as Psych, Criminology or Social Work with:
- 1 year of related experience with emphasis on mental health, substance use homelessness and/or social services.
OR
- Diploma/Certificate in Social services or health with 3 years related experience with emphasis on mental health, substance use, homelessness and/or social services.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience, including lived experience, may be considered.
AND
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Naloxone Training.
- Provincial Violence Prevention Training is considered an asset.
- Successful clearance of a criminal record check.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides a range of supports, serving homeless/at risk individuals.
- Services include a bed, food, and general support of clients who may be facing complex bio-psycho-social issues.
- Responsible for the daily operations of the facility including: intaking new participants into the program; food service; updating client records; communicating effectively with clients and other staff; and maintaining a clean safe and secure environment for staff and clients by participating in regular and timely environment scans.
- Coordinates with the Outreach Team and maintain communication between shifts about participant’s housing plans.
- The minimal barrier approach of the site will require excellent and flexible engagement skills.
- Actively participates in building a skilled, cohesive, collaborative staff team, including demonstrating commitment to program principles; resolving conflict and negativity as they arise; assisting in orienting, training and mentoring of all staff, including casuals and peer supports.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Extensive knowledge and experience of working with marginalized groups of people living with mental health and substance use.
- Extensive knowledge in harm reduction and overdose response (Naloxone) as well as Knowledgeable about current trends in illicit substances.
- Strong communication, conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Active listening and ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
- Outstanding patience, tolerance, and anger control.
- Ability to identify effective methods of behaviour control and compensatory strategies.
- Ability to follow direction and instruction.
- Emotional resilience and compassionate.
- Positive and friendly attitude.

About Progressive Housing Society
Since 1981, Progressive Housing Society has provided support services to adults living with mental health issues or facing homelessness. We are a registered non-profit charity, working with over 150 clients in the Burnaby area.
We believe in empowering people to live well. That's why we help clients with their basic needs while also helping them to live as independently as possible in the community. Access to food, shelter, and healthcare is essential, but we also help clients to develop and maintain life-skills. All of our programs are designed to support clients with their individual needs and preferences in mind.
Progressive Housing Homeless Outreach helps Burnaby residents by:
-Engage with unsheltered individuals dealing with homelessness and provide support services to help stabilize lives.
-Connect with individuals with no income, including making and going with individuals to appointments to seek income.
-Assist individuals to locate a rental unit, apply to social housing, and set up new home with furniture.
-Provide follow-up support that ensures individuals have effectively transitioned to housing and are receiving appropriate health and social service programs and services.
-Provide support services to improve skills, personal health and hygiene, household management, financial management, crisis intervention and problem solving and provide follow-up related to these areas.
-Liaise with and refer to community agencies, groups, organizations and businesses
The Mental Health Team's support programs provide support services to individuals with a severe and persistent mental illness by assisting them to develop and maintain the skills needed to live independently in the community.
Staff provide support areas in the following areas:
-self-care -personal safety -health and wellness -time management -communication skills -illness management -financial management -nutrition -leisure and relationships -vocational interests -educational goals -advocacy around housing issues
There is generally no time limit on how long participants may receive support. As long as participants follow their Mental Health Plan and continue to work on goals, support is provided.
