Prep Technician

Position Summary:
Markham Autoworks is actively looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Prep Technician to join our growing team. If you have a passion for the automotive industry and take pride in quality workmanship, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
The Prep Technician is responsible for preparing vehicles for the paint process in an auto body collision repair facility. This includes sanding, masking, priming, and cleaning the surfaces of vehicles to ensure a smooth and high-quality paint finish. The Prep Technician works closely with painters and body technicians to maintain an efficient workflow and meet production deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspect vehicles and parts to be painted for cleanliness and quality of previous bodywork.
- Sand, mask, and clean vehicle surfaces using abrasives, solvents, and masking materials.
- Apply primers and sealers as directed and according to manufacturer and shop specifications.
- Ensure proper adhesion of paint and other materials by correctly preparing surfaces.
- Operate and maintain shop tools and equipment such as sanders, blow guns, masking tools, and spray guns (for primer).
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of work area, tools, and paint prep booth.
- Assist painters with loading and unloading vehicles into the booth.
- Document work performed and communicate with estimators or supervisors regarding any hidden damage or issues.
- Follow safety procedures and use PPE to protect yourself and the vehicle.
- Ensure quality control standards are met before moving vehicles to the next stage.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Knowledge of BASF 100 line preferred
- 2+ years of experience in auto body or paint preparation preferred but not always required.
- Basic knowledge of vehicle preparation techniques and materials.
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks (lifting, bending, stooping).
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Some painting experience an asset
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced, team-oriented environment in an automotive collision repair shop.
- Exposure to paint fumes, dust, and noise (PPE provided).
- Requires physical effort and ability to work in various positions.
