About the role

The Town of New Tecumseth is looking for dedicated individuals who are interested in contributing to their community by becoming a Paid On Call Firefighter.

Orientation sessions to learn more about our Fire department and the expectations of the role will be held on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, June 18th @ Station 1 (130 Church Street South, Alliston), 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.

  • Wednesday, June 25th @ Station 3 (44 Mill Street East, Tottenham), 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Firefighters provide fire suppression, rescue, and other related emergency services, and participate in programs designed for the prevention of fires, educating the public on fire and life safety behaviours, the saving of lives and the protection of property and the environment. Firefighters are responsible for rapidly, efficiently, and safely performing various duties under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable hazards. Firefighters participate in fire prevention, public education, training, and other departmental programs, performs various routine duties, including the maintenance of firefighting vehicles, equipment, and fire service facilities. Firefighters are required to perform some administrative tasks including completing logs, forms, witness statements, station records, and other reports that may be required.

Eligibility Requirements:

Experienced/Certified Track

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II and NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations certifications (IFSAC or ProBoard)
  • 2 years of previous firefighting experience

Certified Track

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II and NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations certifications (IFSAC or ProBoard)
  • Successful completion of candidate testing through Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) within the last 12 months. See details below:
    • Stage One – Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT) and
    • Stage Three – Firefighter Physical Aptitude Job-Related Tests (FPAT)

Recruit Track

  • Successful completion of candidate testing through Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) within the last 12 months. See details below:
    • Stage One – Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT) and
    • Stage Three – Firefighter Physical Aptitude Job-Related Tests (FPAT)

All Tracks

  • Successful completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid G class driver’s licence, and the ability to submit a clean driver’s abstract upon hire.
  • Ability to obtain a DZ driver’s licence within 1 year of successfully completing probation.
  • Ability to provide a clean Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) upon hire.
  • Must live in the municipality. Proximity of location to Fire Station to respond to calls promptly.
  • Availability to meet and/or exceed department targets for training & responses.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • DZ driver’s licence (a requirement to complete within 1 year of successfully completing probation).
  • Previous firefighting experience.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C and Defibrillation.
  • Construction or building experience.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment or driving commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to respond during business hours (daytime availability is an asset).

OFAI Testing Info:
Please note that candidate testing is completed through Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) and will take place at their site in Mississauga. All fees associated with testing are the responsibility of the candidate. Successful completion of both Stage One/FACT and Stage Three/FPAT are required to progress to the interview stage.
