About the role

Job Summary:

The Child Development Educator is one of the members of the Developmental Services team and works alongside the other members of the department to provide early childhood screening, assessment and support, and to build the capacity of community-based workers to support healthy child development.

The Child Development Educator is directly accountable to the Developmental Services Clinical Manager.

2025 Salary Range: $62, 867 - $84, 442 per annum

Position Type: Full Time Permanent

Qualifications:

  • Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment).
  • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in early childhood education, or in nursing, social work, communicative disorders assistant, Rehabilitation assistant, or other closely related fields with early childhood development training/experience.
  • Experience in administering early childhood screening tools such as the ASQ, Rourke, Looksee, etc.
  • A lifelong learner who is highly conscientious and committed to a high quality of evidence- based
  • practice and ongoing professional learning.
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with all members of the Developmental Services team, community-based staff, community members and children and families
  • Skilled in program development, research, report writing, and computer literacy
  • Experience and understanding of First Nations culture, history, the geographic realities, health priorities and social conditions within remote First Nations’ communities
  • Experience of having worked with a diverse range of stakeholders, internal and external to the organization to achieve successful outcomes through excellent relationship building skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain respectful, cooperative working relationships with First Nations
  • people, communities, service workers and health care providers
  • Ability to work well independently and with team members
  • Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements; to perform the physical demands of the job; demonstrate initiative; demonstrate excellent judgment and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to take initiative, be adaptable, multi task, meet deadlines, and work independently in a fast-paced and ever􀀐changing environment
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Experience working in a First Nations communities and ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout Zone is an asset
  • Experience with caregiver coaching to support early childhood development
  • Strong knowledge of child development from ages 0-6

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work with parents/caregivers to complete developmental screening for their child(ren)
  • Support families to develop meaningful goals related to their child's development based on their concerns and areas of need identified through observation and developmental screening tools
  • Develop service plans to identify developmental goals, support strategies, and track progress.
  • Provide direct developmental intervention through coaching parents/caregivers/family members/educators in the child's natural environments (ie. home, early years setting, school, etc.).
  • Provide subject matter expertise on early childhood development and screening to caregivers and community-based workers.
  • Develop health promotion materials and messaging about healthy child development and the importance of screening and supporting child development
  • Work with the Developmental Services team to develop and implement workshops and education materials for caregivers and community workers to support their knowledge and skills in supporting early childhood development
  • Execute training programs in community for caregivers and communities workers to enhance their knowledge of early childhood development and strategies to support early childhood development
  • Provide ongoing training, mentorship and operational program support to community-based workers to promote healthy child development, and support communities in developing their own programs and approaches to promoting healthy child development.
  • Provide presentations, workshops, radio shows, and activities in communities which promote and/or teach about healthy child development.
  • Identify and develop regional and/or community level partnerships in support of healthy child development.
  • Provide support and guidance to communities to building programming, services, and teachings to promote strong family dynamics to support healthy parents raising healthy children.
  • Represent SLFNHA and Developmental Services on relevant working groups and/or at relevant meetings.
  • All other duties as assigned.
