UHS Mental Health Specialist

The opportunity:

The MHS meets with individual UHS service users presenting with mental health concerns. They would conduct mental health assessments; triaging based on urgency and need. They would provide therapeutic support services and psychoeducational skill building in managing mental health care of individual patients.

This employee would work in collaboration with treating physicians to manage patient mental health challenges by monitoring progress and providing patient support. They would be required to de-escalate situations and stabilize patients in high distress by assessing the situation and responding supportively.

Applicants must have completed a Bachelor's degree in nursing, social work, or an applied mental health discipline or a master's degree in psychology, counselling, or marriage and family therapy is required. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training® (ASIST) or other crisis management response training and trauma-informed practice would be an asset. We would require a minimum of three years’ recent experience working in a clinical setting (hospital-based or community) providing direct mental health care to individuals and groups within an interdisciplinary team is required.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in nursing, social work, or an applied mental health discipline or a master's degree in psychology, counselling, or marriage and family therapy is required.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training® (ASIST) or other crisis management/response training and trauma-informed practice would be an asset.
  • Substance use awareness and related training is an asset.
  • A minimum of three years recent experience working in a clinical setting (hospital-based or community) providing direct mental health care to individuals and groups within an interdisciplinary team is required.
  • Experience working with persons in emotional distress is required.
  • Experience working with individuals expressing diversity in sexual and gender identity and across different cultures and generations is required.
  • Experience and knowledge of intersectional, feminist, anti-oppressive and anti-racist practices related to patient care are required.
  • Knowledge of public health education practices are required.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and harm reduction perspectives and practices required.
  • Knowledge of postsecondary student 'culture' and diverse student needs is preferred.
  • Knowledge of best practices in delivery of student services is preferred.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary institution is preferred.
  • Experience presenting to groups is an asset.
  • Experience in liaising/consulting across professional disciplines is an asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated competence in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) or dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and other therapeutic frameworks are required.
  • Demonstrated effective skills in the following areas: formulation of mental health symptoms within a biopsychosocial framework, interdisciplinary collaboration, critical thinking and clinical reasoning and decision-making are required.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in assessment and triaging of mental health concerns, risk assessment, treatment planning, individual therapy, group therapy, case management, crisis intervention and safety planning are required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills required.
  • Must be creative in order to develop strategic approaches to prevention strategies.
  • Record keeping skills is required.
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with team members and resources required.
  • Ability to work with students of diverse educational, gender, age, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds is required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain proactive relationships with key constituents including students, faculty and staff, and administrators required.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and manage time effectively are required.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team are required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and PHIA/FIPPA is required.
  • High level of commitment to the University of Manitoba community and to the mission of promoting the health and wellness of students is required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Record's, (i.e., Libre or Accuro) preferred.
