Description Purpose and accountability This position supports the individual underwriting of the Special Markets business and is primarily responsible for new business underwriting and statistics. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of Manager, Administration
Summary Of Duties Assess Life, EHB and Critical Illness applications for the line of business within the Company by:
- Utilizing the AM system (Application Management) in the day to day management of insureds that are being underwritten.
- Studying of complete files, determining appropriate requirements based on age, amount of insurance, a proposed insured's medical, avocation/lifestyle and financial profile.
- Evaluating the necessary underwriting evidence such as paramedical exams, blood profiles, urinalysis, attending Physician statements and requesting additional information if required
- Coding and reviewing MIB codes
- Medical decision making and providing decision on files
- Reviewing appropriate applications with one of our Medical Directors. Referring applications to our Medical Directors if necessary.
- classifying proposed insureds into one of 4 categories: standard, substandard, postponed or declined.
- determining whether a rating or exclusion can be assessed based on the numerous group contract provisions.
- Performs ongoing training to other underwriters.
- Meet with medical advisors for complex cases
- Approves and verifies all files that require a co-signature: Life and AD&D – up to $1,000,000., CI – up to $500,000
- Referring files to reinsurer when necessary and according to guidelines
Deliver quality customer service by:
- Consistently meeting the LOBs set turnaround times.
- Providing effective, concise written and verbal communications regarding business being underwritten to a variety of sources such as SM staff, clients, service providers, physicians and Medical Directors.
- Explaining and/or defending underwriting decisions as well as discussing alternatives for clients who have been rated, declined or postponed to SM staff and/or physicians.
- Ensuring AM is updated in a timely and accurate manner to facilitate fast and accurate information to be relayed to SM staff.
- Recommending changes to the AM system and/or procedures and processes to maximize department efficiency.
Protect the Company’s financial interest by:
- Monitoring the quality of business being received and ensuring agents comply with industry and company standards.
- Reporting any suspicious trends or problems to the Underwriting Manager.
- Complying with the company’s underwriting standards and procedures.
- Explaining and/or defending underwriting decisions as well as discussing alternatives for clients who have been rated, declined, or postponed to DS staff and/or physicians
Qualifications:
- University degree plus 1 year insurance experience and willingness to pursue Industry designations.(FALU, FLMI etc)
- Minimum 6-8 years industry equivalency with minimum of LOMA 1 courses and willing to pursue industry designations (FALU and FLMI)
- Successful completion of the LOMA UND385 course

The typical hiring range for this position is from $70,000 and $85,000 annually; the base pay offered is based on location and may vary depending on skills, job-related knowledge, experience, and internal equity. All permanent employees of iA are also entitled to an annual bonus.
