About the role

As part of the library team, you will help build the library’s collections. Your primary responsibilities will be organizing and sending out daily mail, periodicals and newspapers to all branches of the Winnipeg Public Library.

As the Serials Assistant, you will:

  • Process and route newspapers and periodicals.
  • Receive microfilm newspapers and periodicals.
  • Receive and prepare mail for distribution to the Library system.
  • Assist in claiming missing periodical issues.
  • Enter and update information in periodical records on ILS (Horizon).
  • Assist in the processing department by preparing and processing new books and audio-visual materials according to set procedures by affixing labels, stamping, laminating book jackets and attaching them to books, and affixing barcodes.
  • Attend and participate in Support Services meetings.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the classification as assigned.

Your education and qualifications include:

  • High school graduation or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Successful completion of a library technician’s course is an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to type accurately at 20 w.p.m. net.

  • Ability to work accurately and with attention to detail at a variety of repetitive manual tasks.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records.

  • Ability to help train new employees and work harmoniously with other staff members.

  • Familiarity with Horizon ILS and/or automated serials/standing orders procedures an asset.

  • IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada.
