The Opportunity
Keyano College’s Global Access Department is currently seeking a Student Advisor, Global Access. This is a two-year term position with a possibility of renewal contingent of funding.
The Student Advisor, Global Access will provide wrap-around service and guidance regarding settlement, employment, and academic issues specific to the nature of being a LINC student; that is to say, being a newcomer to Canada, potentially carrying trauma, facing immediate financial, health, or other hardship, with limited knowledge of official languages and limited knowledge of Canadian institutions, systems, and culture and how to access them successfully and/or how they work. The Advisor will provide direct support on helping students access all things relating to these areas, working side-by-side to fill out forms, engage services, and overcome hurdles and barriers to successful settlement specifically within the RMWB region.
Note: this is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity, you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB. Preference will be given to candidates currently living in Fort McMurray.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Provide information about application processes, admission requirements, applicable deadlines, registration procedures, student awards, student loans, and other college services available to students to achieve academic and personal success.
- Refer students to services to meet their needs. Follow up may be required.
- Provide students with occupational information where applicable and make referrals if necessary.
- Provide guidance in certificate/diploma/degree planning.
- Provide guidance and advice on IQAS/WES/ICAN and any necessary upgrading of core subjects necessary to pursue a post-secondary credential.
- Guide and assist students in learning about and obtaining financial assistance through government, private, or other public funder.
- Maintenance of records and related duties in electronic (or otherwise) records as determined by the Associate Dean of Academic Upgrading & Global Access, the Chair, LINC, and/or as determined by Keyano College.
- Provide information and guidance on finding work in Canada
- Develop and deliver employment-related workshops based upon needs assessments.
- Connect with local employers to build relationships and student employment opportunities.
- Create and maintain a tracking database for clients for follow-up.
- Conduct follow-up sessions or check-ins to assess the progress and address any ongoing challenges or needs of the newcomers.
- Maintain accurate records of interactions and services provided, as well as preparing reports for funding organizations or government agencies.
- Proficiently use all software programs utilized in the day-to-day operations and delivery of the LINC program (ex: PowerCampus, MS Office Suite, iCARE, Teams, Better Outcomes, etc.).
- Must have a clear understanding of College policies and procedures used to interact with other College departments (ex: Office of the Registrar, Upgrading, etc.).
- Maintain a professional office environment and provide exceptional customer service to ensure positive student experience.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Education, or equivalent

A Settlement Worker/Practitioner Certificate is preferred.

Highly proficient computer skills, particularly with MS office
-
Strong advising, assessment, communication, cultural sensitivity, and interpersonal skills

Familiarity with Alberta or Canadian post-secondary education and entrance requirements

Second language proficiency is strongly beneficial (particularly Amharic, Arabic, French, Spanish, Somali, or Ukrainian)

Demonstrated excellent communication, planning, time management, and organizational skills

Dependable and resourceful team member with a proven track record of managing multiple competing priorities with a calm professional approach

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is $5,437.86 per month (CUPE IS6-1) with the following health and benefit package.

This position qualifies for additional payment of the Northern Living Allowance of $1,040.00 per month.
