The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for two Project Research Assistants, one position will be Bilingual. This position will be responsible for conducting work on the records collections in the possession of the NCTR to allow for all research and names produced and identified by the Missing Children project to be investigated.

The Project Research Assistant will also record evidence of student deaths and unmarked burial sites for future investigation and prepare reports summarizing preliminary research findings on student deaths and burial sites in support of ongoing efforts to identify children who died at residential school and where their bodies are located.

This work may include working with the community engagement team to identify the home communities of these children.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).

Indigenous language and/or French (fluent verbal and written) is required for the bilingual position.

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Graduate degree in a related discipline or archival studies preferred.
  • Class 5 Drivers license is an asset.
  • Three years of directly related experience is required.
  • Experience working with large data sets of highly sensitive personal information required.
  • Experience in using large data sets to narrow down searches and make decisions on the accuracy of research is required.
  • Experience in using archival and document management databases for the purpose of research is required.
  • Previous experience working with Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, or Indigenous communities/organizations is required.
  • Research experience is required; research with Indigenous communities and Indigenous methodologies is preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
