New Afton Mine
Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.
Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. The area provides the opportunity to live and work in a vibrant community with its own university and within easy reach of world class ski resorts, championship golf courses, mountain biking trails, popular recreational lakes and award-winning vineyards.

Position Reports To: Tailings and Surface Superintendent
Position Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Tailings Surveillance Lead position at the New Afton Mine for the Tailings and Surface Technical team. The primary responsibility for this role is to ensure field inspection, monitoring, and technical investigations are being completed safely and on schedule. Key to the success of this role is effective communication and working relationships with personnel in the Safety, Environment, Tailings Operations, Tailings Technical, Capital Project, and Engineer of Record Teams.
Key Responsibilities
-
Put safety first in the planning and execution of all activities
-
Lead the completion of Tailings and Surface surveillance activities including:
-
Attendance at daily safety meetings
-
Completion of weekly dam safety inspections
-
Timely completion of the instrumentation monitoring and maintenance workload
-
Point of contact and coordination for consultant and contractor personnel working on site
-
5-Point Safety Card review and sign-off
-
Coordination of field activities between the operations and technical teams
-
Review and sign-off of weekly inspection reports for completeness and to flag notable observations with senior team members
-
Maintain a log for tracking deficiencies and opportunities for improvement identified through the team’s field work, Quarterly Inspections, and Annual Facility Performance Reviews.

Support the development and maintenance of a proactive safety culture within the Tailings Technical team and support the completion of Job Hazard Assessments, Incident Investigations, and proactive hazard mitigation
-
Develop effective relationships with the site Safety, Environment, and Capital Projects Teams to ensure Tailings Operation and Technical activities align with other site management plans
-
Ensure that existing site assets, including instruments, roadways, pipelines, monitoring systems, etc. are operating to site standards, properly maintained and protected
-
Provide leave coverage for inspection, survey and instrumentation personnel,
-
Lead recruitment for vacancies within the surveillance team
-
Lead the implementation of a co-op succession plan to support survey and instrumentation workload
-
Complete a Mentoring Agreement in the first 6 months in the role
-
Manage, coach, performance manage direct reports and provide them with performance reviews
-
Other duties as required
Qualifications

In addition, the successful candidate will possess:

Mining, Civil, Mechanical or relevant Engineering degree or Technical diploma

5 years mining industry or heavy earthworks experience

2 years' experience leading people

BC Mine Supervisor Certificate (or ability to attain)

Safety focused and team oriented
-
Microsoft Office proficiency
-
Proven influencing, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
-
Track record of managing people and performance management
-
Experience managing contractors and contracts
-
Excellent time management and prioritization skills
Preference will be given to candidates that have:
- Interactions with BC Mines Inspectors and knowledge of the inspection process
- SAP knowledge, INX knowledge, or other mining software knowledge
- In-depth knowledge of the Health Safety and Reclamation Code of BC

2 years of New Afton experience and previous tailings facility inspection and/or construction experience
Other Requirements
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

Completion of pre-placement functional screen
-
Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
-
Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
-
Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
Compensation
The anticipated salary for this position will be between $100,000 to $115,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
