The Senior Data Specialist is an innovative and experienced analytics professional with hands-on expertise in all facets of data product development and a driving passion for turning business challenges and needs into game-changing data products.

Reporting to the Manager of R&D, the Senior Data Specialist will be an integral part of an innovative and dynamic team that translates business needs and opportunities into new data products for the business teams in Commercial Pricing.

To thrive in this role, the Senior Data Specialist will need to have expert-level skills in exploratory data analysis and discovery using both SQL and Python, coupled with extensive experience with the ideation, design, and prototyping of scalable data products on cloud platforms.

What To Expect

  • Actively contribute to the design of new and innovative data products for Commercial Insurance. Analyze and evaluate new data sources based on current and future business requirements.
  • Facilitate and participate in user story and requirement elaboration sessions with business and technical stakeholders, identifying both upstream and downstream functional and non-functional requirements. Oversee the documentation and translation of business needs into compelling user stories with clear business requirements and technical specifications.
  • Contribute to project management activities such as scoping, impact assessments and estimating project efforts, identifying risks and recommending mitigation measures, communicating activity status as well as escalating and communicating possible issues.
  • Working with business and engineering team on test planning, test case creation, documentation, and review of test case results for data products.
  • Working collaboratively with business stakeholders to ensure completeness of data documentation, monitoring of data integrity, and data governance.
  • Keeping current on data and analytics tools and best practices, and share experience and learnings with data consumers and colleagues.

What You Bring

  • University degree in Computer Science, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Min 3-5 years of experience with prototyping and development of data and analytics products as a Data Analyst or Data Engineer. Experience in Agile product development is strongly preferred.
  • Expert level skills in SQL and Python on cloud platforms. Familiarity with Scala, Java or C++ is an asset.
  • Experience with modern insurance processes and common data products is considered a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with data science, machine learning, data visualization, and geospatial analytics.

High degree of proficiency with English required to service customers, both internal to the company and external, across Canada.

Salary range is: $69,000 - $127,000

Actual salary for the role may vary depending on work location of the successful candidate and other factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, working conditions and the local labour market.  In addition to base pay, eligible employees may participate in various incentive plans which are paid out at the discretion of the company and subject to individual and company performance.
