About the role

Family Practice (200-1488)

The six physicians of Vancouver Island's West Coast are looking to recruit a physician to join our highly rewarding, multi-clinic group practice.

We provide longitudinal full scope primary care services to residents of the West Coast via multiple clinics – Ahousat Medical Clinic, Tonquin Medical Center (Tofino), Ucluelet Medical Center, Hitacu Health Center, and Ty Histanis Health Center – as well as Emergency Room and inpatient care at Tofino General Hospital.

Clinics are well established, with a fully integrated EMR. We typically work 3-4 clinic days/week and approximately 6-8 on-calls shifts per month at Tofino General Hospital. The Hospital is a ten bed acute care hospital, with an Emergency Room that can be exceptionally busy and lucrative with the influx of tourism. Summer weekends are covered by locums, and locum vacation relief through the year is typically easy to secure, given the desirability of our location. The hospital is a UBC Island Medical School Program residency teaching site and has a well-established and broad range of visiting specialists.

We are looking for a physician with flexibility to work across multiple clinics, and core values in collaboration, diversity, and cultural safety. We are a very collegial group, and are supported by excellent nursing and ancillary health support (rehab, MSHU, Home & Community Care) from Island Health, Nuu chah nulth (NTC) Health Services, and other community partners. We have very close relationships with our community partners, and a very active and innovate Divisions of Family Practice Chapter (Community based) and Facilities Engagement (hospital based). There is also potential opportunity for clinical innovation through Divisions-supported PCN work, as well as expansion of services to surrounding First Nations communities via collaboration with FNHA's Primary Care Initiative (PCI)

Physician with previous rural and First Nations medical experience and commitment to rural excellence is desirable.

Benefits:

May be eligible for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA) including:

  • Recruitment Incentive - $20,000;
  • Relocation up to $15,000
  • Fee Premium - 16.28%;
  • Annual Flat Fee - $25,221.60
  • Rural CME starting at $1,320 for up to two years, then increasing to $3,520/annum in years 3 and 4 in community, then increasing to a maximum of $5,720/annum after 4 years.

The above amounts are current as of December 2024 and may be subject to change.

Community Information:

Located on the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island, the communities of Tofino and Ucluelet are just 30 minutes apart. Joined by the Pacific Rim National Park, and incorporating part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, they have become two of Canada's most sought after tourist destinations.

Including six surrounding First Nations communities and various work communities, the region has a combined population of about 6000 year-round residents. During the tourist season, the area population increases substantially.

Offering a relaxed and rewarding West Coast lifestyle the area boasts miles of sandy beaches, a multitude of trails through old growth forests, hot springs and more. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy surfing, beach walking, whale watching, kayaking, golf, fishing, hiking and storm watching. Tofino can easily be covered on foot and features boutiques, art galleries, B & B's, world-class resorts, restaurants and quaint cafés.
