Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Oncology and Compounding services and closely with the Manager, Pharmacy Operations and Medication Distribution, and the Lead Technician, Oncology, the Lead Technician, Pharmacy Compounding, is responsible for educating, training, supervising, and enforcing the NAPRA standards for non-sterile and sterile hazardous and non-hazardous compounding at the Main Pharmacy site and the Oncology Pharmacy. The Lead Technician, Pharmacy Compounding technician will ensure that technicians performing compounding are working to full scope of their license and develop a training program for implementation of tech-check-tech and ongoing certification.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong Knowledge of USP 795, USP 797, USP 800, NAPRA, Ontario College of Pharmacists, and Accreditation Canada standards and Model Standards of Practice for Pharmacy Technicians
  • General knowledge of MEDITECH Pharmacy modules preferred
  • General knowledge of development, implementation & adherence to policies/ procedures and standard operating procedures
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • Knowledge of multiculturalism and diversity
  • Sound problem solving, communication (oral and written), conflict resolution and decision-making skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management

Qualifications

  • Registered pharmacy technician, in good standing with the Ontario College of pharmacists
  • Graduate of an Accredited Pharmacy Technician College.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in an acute care hospital pharmacy, preferred
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience with compounding standards
  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory experience in hospital pharmacy, preferred

Primary Responsibilities

Acts as the Non-Hazardous and Hazardous, Sterile and Non-Sterile Compounding Specialist

  • Ensures compliance with NAPRA, USP, ISMP, OCP and Accreditation Canada Standards
  • Develops, implements, and regularly reviews all policies and procedures related to compounding.
  • Develops and implements training and certification programs for new and existing employees
  • Develops and performs audits to ensure compliance with standards
  • Develops and coordinates a quality assurance program for compounding in compliance with NAPRA standards (e.g. Media Fill test, glove fingertip testing, Hazardous surface testing, didactic, practical and theoretical training)
  • Develops and coordinates a quality assurance program for the maintenance of equipment and clean rooms in compliance with NAPRA standards
  • Develops and maintains a stability chart for hazardous and non-hazardous sterile compounds and establishes beyond use dating (BUD) for all sterile and non-sterile preparations
  • Ensures labeling of new products is adherent to NAPRA standards for all compounded products
  • Ensures record retention is adherent to NAPRA and the Ontario College of Pharmacists
  • Develops and maintains master compounding worksheets and compounding formulations as required
  • Develops, reviews and updates compounding workflows
  • Investigates as appropriate, medication incidents related to Non-Hazardous and Hazardous Sterile and Non-Sterile Compounding
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Pharmacy, Managers, Drug Utilization Team, frontline staff and other health care professionals to facilitate the integration of professional and technical standards and promote safe compounding practices
  • Works front line in Non-Hazardous sterile compounding rotation one shift per week and in designated weekend rotation
  • Mentors and guides as a resource for front-line pharmacy technicians in completing their daily activities related to compounding
  • Acts as the Pharmacy Liaison with Environmental Services (EVS) including ensuring the training and qualification of EVS supervisors, conducting walkthroughs of compounding facilities with the EVS supervisors, and ensures EVS training records are maintained and repackaging
  • Participates in training and preceptorship of students
  • Contributes to ongoing quality improvement initiatives related to compounding and repackaging
  • Assumes responsibility for the day-to-day scheduling of compounding pharmacy technicians in collaboration with the Manager of Operations and Medication
  • Other duties, as assigned
