About the role

You’re a civil engineering student who’s ready to get your hands on a real engineering project. You perform best in groups where you know what’s expected of you. You’re not afraid to ask questions. You make—and own—your decisions. You want to learn more about the design process, and how a team works together to get projects done.

Binnie is looking for an Engineering Assistant to join our Transportation Major Projects Division, which provides Owner’s Engineer services for the design, procurement and delivery of major infrastructure projects in British Columbia.

Our recent projects include Fraser River Tunnel Project, Highway 91/17 Improvements, Patullo Bridge Replacement project and Alex Fraser Bridge Capacity Improvements.

The position is in our Burnaby office, located near scenic Deer Lake for Sep to Dec 2025 (4-month work term) with potential to increase the work term depending on workload and availability.

You will be working with some of the most experienced senior technical experts in the industry, Senior Project Managers and Engineers on interesting design management, traffic engineering and field assignments. You will be a member of our diverse team in a challenging role that offers mentorship opportunities.

YOUR ROLE:

  • Modifying basic design drawings in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Completing field assignments as required by Project Managers.
  • Performing design calculations as required by Project Managers and Engineers.
  • Preparing technical reports under the direction of Project Managers and Engineers.
  • Plotting, assembling, and delivering drawing submission packages.
  • Preparing project documentation including hard copy and electronic file transfers.
  • Maintaining file naming and layer management conventions set by Binnie.
  • Completing quality control procedures.

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • Understanding of transportation engineering principles and approach.
  • Previous work experience in a civil engineering environment with exposure to transportation engineering projects and software such as AutoCAD and Civil3D.
  • Currently completing Degree in Civil Engineering (3rd year student or equivalent preferred).
  • Valid Driver’s License to conduct site visits as required (an asset but not required).
  • Willing to work outdoors on-site as required.
  • Ability to consistently produce accurate, high-quality work.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.

About Binnie

Civil Engineering

We began as a civil engineering firm in 1969, but have grown into much more. Though we remain experts at civic infrastructure, we now have a wide range of disciplines, from offices in northern, central, and southern BC.

If you have driven in British Columbia, used tap water or visited a regional park or sports field, you have engaged with our work. We work in communities all over BC and across Canada, offering construction services and highway engineering, traffic planning, land development, urban landscape architecture, parks and recreation facilities, project management, geomatics and land surveying services.

Recent projects include the Alex Fraser Bridge Improvement Project, Translink RapidBus Service, and the BCIT North Campus Infrastructure Project. Whether we’re working on a road, a park or a hospital, we see beyond the engineering to the communities that will use them – now and well into the future.
