The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) is a national, charitable organization dedicated to the equality, equity, and empowerment of Muslim women in Canada. Since 1982, CCMW has been promoting the identity of Muslim women in the Canadian context through advocacy, education, and research. 

CCMW LAW (Legal Advocacy for Women) is CCMW's initiative to improve access to justice for Muslim women in Ontario. This program offers direct legal advice and representation in family law, legal workshops, and accessible educational resources tailored to the unique needs of Muslim women.

The Law Clerk will provide legal and administrative support to the Legal Counsel and legal services team. They will assist with file management, document preparation, client communication, and coordination of legal education initiatives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Main duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing and drafting financial statements, net family property statements, correspondence, legal and other court documents
  • Commissioning affidavits
  • Liaise with clients, court officials, and other legal professionals to coordinate meetings and appearances
  • Managing court filings and adhering to strict deadlines
  • Manage and organize electronic client files ensuring files are up to date and accessible to the client team
  • Provide general administrative support including calendar management, scheduling, deadlines, and bring-forwards
  • Working in a client team environment with senior lawyer, associates, clerks and students
  • Preparing, organizing, and maintaining legal documents, forms, and correspondence related to family law and related legal matters.
  • Supporting legal counsel in file preparation for legal advice clinics and client meetings.
  • Assisting with intake and triage of new client inquiries, ensuring respectful and efficient client service.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date client files, both digitally and in hard copy, in compliance with confidentiality and data protection policies.
  • Conducting preliminary legal research and summarizing findings as needed.
  • Coordinating interpretation services, client referrals, and communication with support staff such as counsellors and case managers.
  • Assisting with planning and logistics for legal workshops and community education sessions.
  • Contributing to the development and formatting of legal information materials and resources.
  • Supporting data collection for program evaluation and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Law Clerk diploma or certificate from a recognized institution.
  • 3+ years of experience in a law clerk or legal assistant role, preferably with a focus on family law, access to justice, or legal aid services
  • Strong understanding of family law procedures and processes, including Family Law Rules and Practice Directions
  • Experience working with clients from diverse and vulnerable communities.
  • Knowledge of DivorceMate
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital file systems.
  • In addition to English, proficiency in French and Arabic, Urdu, Farsi, Bangla, and/or Pashto would be an asset.

Working Conditions:

40 hours/week; mostly virtually; in person as required; based in the Greater Toronto Area; ability to travel as necessary.
