POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting directly to the Health Manager, the Community Garden Coordinator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the WFN community garden. The Community Garden Coordinator oversees planning, coordinating and implementing work activities, growing and harvesting vegetables and herbs, and working with volunteers and programs (Sensisyusten School, Family Program, Youth & Recreation, etc.).

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of a certificate or diploma program in horticulture, agriculture, or a similar area of study preferred
  • Working Knowledge of basic gardening methods, plant maintenance, and principles of sustainable gardening
  • Working knowledge of operating garden equipment and tools
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and strong general computer literacy
  • Experience in carpentry or construction is considered an asset
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered

REQUIREMENTS

  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search with results acceptable to WFN
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Ensures regular maintenance at the community garden sites including weeding, irrigation, and general garden appearance
  • Ensures garden plots and community spaces are ready for use by preparing soil, organizing tools, setting up planting areas, and maintaining a clean and functional gardening environment
  • Plant seasonal plants, vegetables and herbs according to schedule and ensure the garden is properly watered throughout the season
  • Order supplies, materials and tools as needed to support the program
  • Communicates with the Manager on any concerns in the management of the community garden
  • Coordinates volunteers and community programs to help tend and harvest the community garden throughout the season, including summer and fall programs
  • Facilitates education workshops and information materials that will engage families and programs on food sovereignty
  • Promotes the community garden and activities through social media, newsletter and other information platforms
  • Track volunteers and program involvement throughout the season for reporting
  • Support the community fridge and pantry programs, where possible
  • Attends food sovereignty conferences, workshops and training if available
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards, and procedures, and as assigned by the manager

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Strong gardening knowledge and expertise
  • Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to teach gardening concepts to a variety of learners
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions while adhering to safety measures
  • Engage community members with a positive attitude and engaging personality
  • An understanding of and commitment to food sovereignty
  • Demonstrates a high degree of confidentiality in interpersonal interaction
  • Working knowledge of the history of colonization in Canada and its ongoing impact on modern issues affecting Indigenous Peoples
  • Working knowledge in communicating with Indigenous Peoples, demonstrating sensitivity and empathy, and awareness of how language choices can influence and impact conversations.

The median hourly wage for this position is $29.86
