YOUR ROLE
The primary function and focus of the Fleet Manager is to conduct hands-on maintenance and repairs of fleet vehicles and equipment scheduled for work in a timely, efficient, and effective manner.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops and implements vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance programs.
- Directing a preventive maintenance program to minimize cost and maximize use of equipment
- Oversee safety and maintenance records of commercial trucks, chassis, & heavy equipment are accurate and up to date.
- Planning, organizing, and directing the work to meet objectives with the most efficient use of personnel, facilities and equipment.
- Managing the department staff, including responsibility for hiring, scheduling performance management, discipline and authorization of overtime in conjunction with the General Manager.
- Regularly communicating with GM, Safety & Compliance, and dispatch regarding status of equipment.
- Submitting regular reports including, road calls, break downs, accidents and performance.
- Administering activities connected with the purchase of workshop tools, repair supplies, repair parts, and accessories
- Recommending reductions or additions to personnel, facilities and equipment and changes in level of service
- Administering a testing and inspection program to determine quality, suitability, and compliance with the specifications for vehicles, parts, accessories and materials
- Supervising complicated mechanical maintenance and repair work on, trucks and other motorized equipment used in the field of transportation, hauling and maintenance purposes.
- Supervising Vehicle Maintenance and repair – Typical tasks include: Overhaul engines (rebuilds); overhauls transmissions; repair air conditioning units, overhaul differentials, overhauls brakes; repair and replaces electrical; systems, (e.g., alternators starters, batteries, regulators)
- Supervising Garage coordination. Typical tasks include; keeps inventory of parts supplies; requisitions parts and supplies needed; coordinates the flow of vehicles awaiting maintenance or repairs; provides direct guidance to lower level auto mechanics that may assist with major repair work
- Supervising use/ interpretation of information from on-board computers, diagnose complex vehicle or equipment problems and use advanced vehicle repair techniques
- Applying customer service methods and procedures
- Performing any other job related duties as assigned from time to time.
- Ability to adapt and succeed in a challenging environment.
- Ensure all vehicle accidents are accurately recorded and investigated with claim forms submitted to the Safety & Compliance Officer.
- Manage the processes for obtaining damage estimates and the carrying out of repairs.
- Ensure maximum availability of fleet and plant for operational teams.
Anticipated Outcomes of Post
- Compliance with all fleet and transport regulations.
- Achievement of all financial and performance criteria.
- Maximise availability of fleet and plant for operational teams.
- Develop the fleet, vehicle maintenance and control centre units into effective commercial business units.
OTHER DUTIES
To undertake additional duties as required, commensurate with the level of the job including response to operational incidents or emergencies.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- 9-12 years of escalating responsibility in large fleet management.
- 5-7 years in a managerial role, managing a team of mechanics.
- Master mechanic license or certificate would be considered an asset.
- An in depth understanding of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
- Operating and maintenance requirements of various types of heavy construction equipment
- Experience in working with Diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical, heavy equipment.
- Working knowledge of French is required.
