About the role

We're Hiring: Director of Financial Services Lead. Strategize. Support. Sturgeon Public Schools is currently seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Financial Services to join our leadership team. This is a full-time permanent position reporting directly to the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services .

Guided by the Division's vision, mission, and values, the Director of Financial Services plays a critical role in overseeing financial operations, promoting efficiency, and supporting division-wide fiscal responsibility. The successful candidate will be a collaborative leader with strong financial acumen who thrives in a team environment and is passionate about public education.

What You'll Do The Director must fulfill professional responsibilities and provide services in accordance with The Sturgeon Public School Division's policies, ensuring that these activities are within the limits of their knowledge, experience, and skill. Duties of this role include but are not limited to:

Financial Service

  • In concert with and under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services, prepare reports to assist with the preparation of the principles for the basis of allocations and the Division's annual budget.
  • Maintain the Division budget and financial systems for staffing and expenditures, ensuring reconciliation between the software systems.
  • Administer and support all functions of the Division budget and financial systems for all cost centers.
  • Oversee Payroll and Benefits team, including the approval and payment of employee salaries and wages, and administration of employee benefit program.
  • Oversee Financial Services team, including but not limited to performing and/or overseeing all accounting duties for the Division.
  • Leads the planning, organization, direction, and evaluation of Finance department operations to ensure safe and efficient delivery of accounting services.
  • Manages core Accounting functions, including oversight of cash management, accounts receivable and payable, journal entries, and payment runs to ensure compliance with deadlines and accuracy standards.
  • Assists in refining internal processes and promotes cross-training initiatives to optimize Finance department workflows and operational efficiency.
  • Facilitates the preparation of the annual audited financial statement for the Division and collaborates with the external auditors as their main contact.
  • Coordinates the preparation, review, and submission of Government Reporting Entity (GRE) documentation.
  • Ensures the Division complies with all tax, accounting, and other financial requirements, which may affect the Division and ensures the financial records are in accordance with public sector accounting procedures and practices and in compliance with the requirements of Alberta Education.
  • Prepare quarterly financial reports for the information of the Board, Superintendent and Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services.
  • Prepare all financial and statistical reports and statements for review by the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services and submit to AB Education regarding grants and other revenues.

Human Services Management:

  • Foster and promote a culture of collaboration and positivity within the finance and payroll departments ensuring the departments work as a unified team.
  • Communicate short- and long-term plans, progress and achievement regularly.
  • Provide input on job descriptions and ensure supervisory and evaluation processes are implemented.
  • Offer professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills

Policy/Procedures:

  • Provide leadership in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of recommended Board Policies and Administrative Procedures within areas of responsibility.
  • Supports the design, implementation, and monitoring of financial internal controls, procedures, and Administrative Policies across the Division.
  • Ensure the application of Board policies and Administrative Procedures as required in the performance of duties.

Organizational Management:

  • Demonstrate effective organizational skills resulting in compliance with all legal, Ministerial and Board mandates and timelines, and adherence to Superintendent and Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services' directives.
  • Contribute to a Division culture which facilitates positive results, effectively manages emergencies, and deals with crisis situations in a team-oriented, collaborative and cohesive fashion.
  • Ensure the maintenance, access and protection of records in accordance with the

Access to Information Act (ATIA) and Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) Regulations

Communications And Community Relations

  • Take appropriate actions to ensure open, transparent internal and external communications are developed and maintained in areas of responsibility.
  • Ensure parents, schools, and staff have a high level of satisfaction with the services provided and the responsiveness of the department.
  • Engage with other divisions, stakeholders, and government authorities in AB to enhance collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Executive Team Relations:

  • Establish and maintain positive, professional working relations with the members of the Division's Senior Executive team.
  • Honour and facilitate the implementation of the Board's roles and responsibilities as defined in Board policy and encourages staff to do the same.
  • As required, assist the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services with matters related to property management and student transportation.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Associate Superintendent, Corporate Services

What You Bring:

  • Degree in Business and a professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA)
  • Senior management experience with proven leadership capabilities
  • Knowledge of PowerSchool and Rycor
  • Strong research, analytical, and decision-making skills
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with schools and educational governance is considered an asset
  • Clear Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality when handling personal, financial, and strategic information

Upon completion of the candidate's probationary period a partial hybrid working arrangement can be considered.

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found. Initial round of interviews will occur in late July or early August depending on availability and applications.
