Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking an AI Architect for a full-time continuing opportunity with the Information Technology Services department.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Cloud Services & Architecture, the AI Architect is responsible for developing and deploying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) solutions across the institution. This includes designing models, implementing intelligent automation, and integrating AI capabilities into existing enterprise applications. You will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to support both academic and administrative AI initiatives. The role emphasizes applied AI, with a focus on operational efficiency, scalable deployments, and responsible use of emerging technologies within the post-secondary context. You will be instrumental in implementing AI systems that deliver measurable outcomes and contribute to the institution’s digital transformation by delivering AI capabilities that are ethical, sustainable, and aligned with institutional goals.
Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating project planning, resource allocation, and risk management for AI initiatives in alignment with institutional priorities;
- Designing, building, and deploying AI/ML models to support institutional needs in teaching, research, and operations;
- Integrating AI solutions with enterprise systems (e.g., SIS, ERP, LMS, CRM) using APIs and middleware;
- Applying responsible AI practices in model development, including bias mitigation and explainability, and data privacy;
- Ensuring seamless model deployment and interoperability with internal data sources and workflows;
- Staying current with advancements in AI, machine learning, and generative technologies (e.g., large language models (LLMs));
- Researching, analyzing, and evaluating the applicability and feasibility of new technologies, changes or enhancements to current technologies, and effects of new methodologies;
- Creating and maintaining documentation on model architecture, deployment processes, and integration workflows; and
- Sharing insights, knowledge, and best practices with colleagues through presentations, code reviews, and training sessions.

SKILLS
You will have:
- A strong understanding of data pipelines, APIs, and integration best practices;
- Knowledge of responsible AI, privacy, and security practices;
- The ability to translate business problems into technical AI/ML solutions;
- Experience designing and deploying AI/ML solutions in production;
- Proficiency in Python, ML libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.), and cloud services;
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment;
- Commitment to continuous learning and innovation;
- Skills with rapid prototyping and agile development methodologies;
- An understanding of data governance and ethical AI frameworks;
- Comfort working across interdisciplinary teams and translating needs across technical and non-technical stakeholders;
- Experience with MLOps practices and CI/CD for model deployment;
- Familiarity with tools such as Git, GitHub, Docker, Jupyter Notebooks, and cloud ML platforms (e.g., SageMaker, Azure ML Studio, Azure AI Studio. OpenAI etc.);
- Experience working with large datasets and structured/unstructured data;
- The ability to stay current on AI trends and evaluate emerging technologies for institutional use;
- Strong attention to detail along with excellent organizational, time management, analytical, and critical thinking skills;
- A willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies, particularly AI and machine learning techniques;
- Demonstrated experience in software development, data analysis, or enterprise systems that can be applied to AI projects; and
- Curiosity and initiative in exploring new tools, coding approaches, and emerging trends in automation and data science.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Data Science or related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in Enterprise App Development and with enterprise data and system integration.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in AI/ML development.
- Familiarity with or experience in a post-secondary or other public sector environment is considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- The position works 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. However, the nature of the position may require the AI Architect to participate in support, coverage and escalations for the ITS On-call schedule as well as work some weekends and evenings to support the operations.
