District of Summerland Director of Planning and Development
Nestled in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, Summerland is a picturesque community with a population of approximately 12,600 residents. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) the Director of Planning and Development is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures related to planning & land use administration, and a comprehensive planning program for the District of Summerland. This position manages a Planning, Building Official, and Administration team to complete land development, building and permitting, strategic planning projects and holds the statutory position of Sub-division Approving Officer.
This opportunity calls for a dynamic, progressive leader, proven in building and fostering trusting and collaborative relations via strong communication, organizational, and cooperative leadership skills. The incumbent is responsible for the effective delivery of outstanding service to residents, businesses, and the development community in a role that assists in strengthening the local economy. The Director will take on projects related to community development and is responsible for coordinating updates of new and existing community, neighbourhood and other related policy plans.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in Planning or another related field in the development industry with a minimum of five years professional planning experience, including executive leadership and supervisory roles in a unionized local government setting. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent project management skills, particularly within complex, high profile, large-scale, or time sensitive projects and be fully conversant with development legislation, policies and financial requirements.
The District of Summerland offers a salary range of $134,471 to $157,857 along with a competitive benefits package including a Municipal Pension Plan as well as continued career and professional development opportunities. Work hours are based on 35 hours per week and an optional 4-day compressed work week (Tuesday to Friday) is available.
