JOB SUMMARY:

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for obtaining specimens (i.e. blood, urine, etc.) from inpatients, pre-admission patients, registered hospital outpatients and outpatients associated with other hospital programs as they arrive at the Laboratory Outpatient area, as well as patients in the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre. Responsible for the delivery of specimens to the appropriate area and / or campus for processing. Responsible for routine technical and clerical duties relating to the operations of the Specimen Management area, including data entry into the Laboratory Information System. Under the direction of qualified laboratory personnel, performs laboratory tests within their scope of practice as per Ministry of Health Guidelines. The Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for delivery of care consistent with the vision and values of the hospital and the standards of relevant professional organizations. The incumbent must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment.

QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of A Medical Laboratory Technician Program from an accredited College – required
  • MLPAO or CSMLS certification - preferred
  • Training in blood collecting techniques, familiar with medical terminology;
  • Evidence of good interpersonal skills in dealing with the public in a health care setting;
  • Ensures the confidentiality of all patient information;
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment;
  • General good health and a level of functional ability appropriate to the demands of the position.
  • French language skills an asset
