Culinary Supervisor-Aspen

Overview

Reporting directly to the Community Manager and indirectly to the Technical Advisor, Dining Services, the Culinary Supervisor supervises, provides training, coordinates, and contributes to the activities of cooks and other kitchen personnel engaged in preparing and cooking foods at Silvera for Seniors.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and oversee food delivery in line with Silvera standards (Policy 7.50).
  • Supervise and train cooks and kitchen staff to ensure efficient, timely, and cost-effective food service.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including safe food handling and sanitation standards.
  • Plan menus and utilize food surpluses and leftovers based on resident count, market availability, and preferences.
  • Monitor food preparation, portioning, and garnishing to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Inspect food and supplies upon delivery for quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Manage food and supply ordering based on consumption needs.
  • Direct and supervise dining staff schedules, payroll submissions, and leave requests.
  • Support and communicate Silvera’s dining service vision and continuous improvement goals.
  • Participate in monthly audits and share feedback with leadership.
  • Recruit, develop, and manage dining staff according to Silvera policy and employment standards.
  • Conduct performance reviews, resolve conflicts, and maintain a respectful, team-oriented kitchen environment.
  • Coordinate cleaning schedules for kitchen, dining areas, and storage.
  • Maintain inventory and order non-food supplies under the guidance of the Technical Advisor.
  • Work within food budget and review menus regularly.
  • Oversee implementation of Silvera’s Accounting for Residents procedure.
  • Ensure compliance with the Supportive Living Accommodation Licensing Act.
  • Direct and assist with food preparation for daily meals and special events.
  • Promote and participate in Silvera’s Health and Safety Program and other projects/committees as needed.
  • Engage with residents regularly to address feedback and resolve service or food-related concerns.
  • Meet and orient new residents on dining services in a timely manner.
  • Escalate concerns and report actions to appropriate leadership.
  • Lead bi-monthly meetings with Hospitality Supervisor and Resident Dining Council.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to ensure open communication with dining services staff.
  • Assume leadership in the absence of key roles such as Cook, Hospitality Supervisor, or Community Manager.
  • Identify and report safety concerns to relevant personnel.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Certification or training in culinary arts preferred (Journeyman Red Seal or equivalent).
  • Supervisory experience in restaurant, catering, or institutional settings; senior living experience is an asset.
  • Proven leadership and staff motivation skills.
  • Commitment to respectful, compassionate senior care.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong organization and time management.
  • Flexible and solution-oriented with a positive attitude.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • High standard of hygiene and appearance.
  • Willingness to attend Silvera-requested training.
  • Certifications required: First Aid, WHMIS, Safe Food Handling.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel skills.
  • Familiarity with MealSuite or Sysco Synergy is an asset.

Work Conditions

  • Must be able to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Required to do repetitive food preparation work.
  • Must be able to withstand temperature changes.
  • Required to travel between Communities and Supervise multiple sites.
  • Will be exposed to:

o Corrosive and non-corrosive chemicals.

o Frequent bending and stretching.

o Pulling and pushing, lifting furniture.

o Operating heavy cleaning equipment on an infrequent basis.
