Opportunity AIMCo’s Renewable Resources program comprises a global portfolio of land-centric, high-quality timberland and agricultural assets that are characterized by their low correlation to traditional asset classes, inflation-hedging qualities, and a strong match with client time horizons. Renewable resources assets serve to provide capital preservation, current yield, and real asset appreciation. The Renewable Resources program is concentrated in developed market countries with an opportunistic view on emerging market exposure. Flexibility is ingrained into the Renewable Resources mandate, which allows the team to maximize long-term value by optimizing portfolio assets between timberland, agriculture, and strategic investments along the value chain.

As the successful Analyst, Renewable Resources, you will assist senior team members in managing the portfolio, currently valued at over $4.0 billion and growing. You will collaborate closely with senior investment professionals in a competitive global environment, conducting due diligence on new investment opportunities, asset management of existing investments, and portfolio management activities. Your keen attention to detail, resilience under pressure, and commitment to excellence in financial modelling, market research, and investment analysis are fundamental to your success in this role. From day one, you will receive coaching and develop a deeper understanding of the M&A process, negotiations, investment structuring, and managing private investments. Responsibilities

  • New Investment Pursuits
  • Build and work with complex dynamic financial models utilized in the assessment, structuring, and financing of investment opportunities
  • Identify key value drivers and financial risks and perform related sensitivity and scenario analysis
  • Benchmark valuation through researching relevant public information available on listed comparable companies and precedent transactions
  • Develop a view on an appropriate expected return, commensurate with the level of risk embedded in the underwritten business plan
  • Assist in the due diligence process and incorporate the findings into a financial model
  • Participate in or lead key due diligence workstreams conducted on investment opportunities, including coordination and review of the work performed by third-party advisors (commercial, technical, legal, financing, accounting, tax, environmental, etc.)
  • Prepare due diligence and market research analyses for discussion with senior investment professionals
  • Assess the pertinent factors of potential investment opportunities, including the historical and projected financial information, strategic positioning and value proposition, industry dynamics, regulatory environment, etc.
  • Prepare presentations, memos, and investment recommendations for the various approval processes required while pursuing new investment opportunities
  • Make recommendations, investment analysis, and approval materials clearly outlining potential investment opportunities, including expected risks and returns, as well as detailed market and asset-level considerations
  • Asset Management
  • Support ongoing oversight and monitoring of portfolio investments
  • Prepare various ad hoc analyses of portfolio companies’ performance and trajectories
  • Observe board meetings and/or limited partner advisory committee meetings
  • Work with portfolio company management to develop and maintain financial models that can be used to monitor and value the company and understand strategic issues.
  • Develop and review business cases for portfolio company value creation initiatives (e.g., debt refinancings, expansion projects, management compensation, ongoing budgeting, etc.)
  • Assist with the review of add-on investments, divestitures, and refinancing opportunities
  • Portfolio Management
  • Lead the preparation of recurring and ad hoc asset class commentary and presentations (e.g., quarterly client reports, CIO reports, ad-hoc internal / external presentations, etc.)
  • Work with senior investment professionals to track the Renewable Resources pipeline of new opportunities
  • Conduct research and develop action plans on matters affecting existing investments, including those relating to tax, regulation, law, and competitive position
  • Keep up to date on pertinent industry developments and publications and disseminate relevant information to the rest of the investment team
  • Liaise with internal teams, such as Asset Management, Risk Management, Client & Stakeholder Relations, Legal, Valuations, Responsible Investing, Compliance, Economics & Fund Strategy, Tax, Communications, and Performance

Year One Success is achieved by demonstrating adaptability and perseverance in the face of shifting priorities while making positive contributions to team culture. Additionally, the successful candidate will have evaluated several types of renewable resource investments, worked on various financial models, provided analysis based on market research and due diligence workstreams, and created investment committee presentations for a diverse set of investment opportunities.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field; completion or pursuit of a Professional Designation (e.g., CFA, CPA, CBV, CAIA, etc.) or a master’s degree in a relevant field is considered an asset
  • One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience; prior experience in Investment Banking, Equity Research, Project Finance, Management Consulting, Investment Management, Transaction Services, Accounting, Corporate Finance, or Business Development within an operating company is an asset
  • Experience in the renewable resource sectors is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in investing and analyzing businesses across various sectors and geographies, with a keen enthusiasm to deepen understanding of institutional renewable resource investments
  • Has a solid understanding of finance, accounting, and business concepts, sound judgement, excellent analytical, quantitative, and research skills, and an ability to perform in-depth, critical analysis
  • Prior experience in complex financial modelling, asset valuation, and presentation building is highly regarded
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and thrive under high-pressure situations to meet strict deadlines
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, with the ability to balance multiple priorities
  • Highly resilient with a proven ability to adapt quickly and shift priorities in response to changing business needs
  • Possesses a positive outlook, even in challenging situations, and exhibits a strong commitment to fostering a collaborative work environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a demonstrated ability to influence others and present effectively to senior-level audiences
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a team player attitude; able to build effective relationships
  • Is self-motivated and possesses unquestioned personal and professional integrity
  • Advanced skills in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; prior work-related or academic experience using Bloomberg, Capital IQ, or FactSet is viewed favorably
  • Willingness and availability to travel both domestically and internationally as required
  • Working proficiency in a second language is considered an asset
