Research Topic and Significance The primary focus of this PhD project is on flood risk assessment and the development of effective mitigation strategies for the Greater Toronto Area. As climate change intensifies rainfall events and urbanization increases impervious surfaces, the need for robust, science-based solutions is more urgent than ever. Project Details The successful candidate will join a collaborative research group within the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering. The project will involve the application of advanced hydrological and hydraulic models to assess flood hazards, as well as the integration of these models with risk assessment frameworks to guide urban planning and infrastructure design. The position comes with a competitive funding package of CAD 40,000 per year, inclusive of tuition fees, and is set to begin in January 2026. The research will be closely aligned with the needs of municipal stakeholders, offering the potential for real-world impact.
Candidate Profile This Opportunity Is Best Suited For Candidates Who – Hold both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
– Have a strong background in hydrological and hydraulic modelling.
– Possess experience with Python programming and GIS tools (considered an asset).
– Demonstrate academic excellence, with undergraduate and master’s GPA averages of at least B+ (3.3/4.0 or 78%).
– For international applicants, can verify their grade equivalency using the International Degree Equivalencies Tool.
– Meet the English Language Proficiency Requirements of the department.
Ideal applicants will be motivated, analytical, and committed to interdisciplinary research that bridges engineering, environmental science, and urban planning.
