Hourly: $52.41-$114.65/hour; Per Three Credit Course: $7,947; Actual salary or hourly rate will be based on the number of credits and term of appointment according to the Collective Agreement.

WHAT IT TAKES

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and learning strategies that align with the departmental and college-wide vision, mission, and goals. The faculty member will provide instruction to students in the Medical Office Administration program. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Teach and supervise certificate program students;
  • Prepare and deliver education to students using a variety of educational method (e.g. lectures facilitating seminars, case studies, discussion groups, and independent and group project work);
  • Develop curriculum and prepare teaching materials for assigned courses;
  • Prepare and administer course assessment including, but not limited to, grading of examinations, assignments, and reports;
  • Ensure equity, diversity and inclusion, and learning support services provided at Douglas College are factored into teaching and learning strategies in a meaningful way;
  • Within scope of expertise, advise students on matters pertaining to their academics and career decisions;
  • Apply teaching and learning strategies using available technology including, but not limited to, learning management systems (Blackboard Ultra);
  • Promote evidence-based best practices in experiential learning; and
  • Assist in collecting data to evaluate teaching and learning strategies.

To be successful in this role, you require:
A bachelor’s degree in a related field (health care, business);

  • A minimum of six years’ experience working in a medical office or hospital setting;

  • Demonstrated experience and excellent ability to teach at the post-secondary level;

  • Understanding of the principles of adult education;

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian healthcare system, including structure and governance, legal requirements (FOIPPA, E-Health Act), patient rights, data security and release of information;

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the role and scope of practice of the MOA;

  • Ability to accept responsibility, exercise initiative and manage people effectively;

  • Demonstrated excellence in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, professional communication, conflict resolution skills, and teamwork;

  • Knowledge of the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion;

  • Knowledge of the social determinants of health;

  • Skilled in using computer software applications, such as MS Office, and proven keyboarding skills at an intermediate to advanced level;

  • Knowledge about Electronic Medical Records;

  • Skilled in document preparation and records set-up and management;

  • Sound judgment and professionalism and a demonstrated ability to act tactfully, diplomatically, and with discretion in all contexts, internally and externally;

  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and oral;

  • Ability to address equity, diversity and inclusion in teaching and learning strategies in a meaningful way; and

  • Registration as a Health information-Certified Associate (HICA) or willingness to complete registration requirements within one year of employment.

Additional Information

The Medical Office Administration program of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Douglas College is inviting applications for contract faculty instructors. The primary place of work will be at the Coquitlam campus.
