Job Description

Are you interested in supporting the creation of online and print art books illustrated with engaging and original visual content? Do you have experience with copyright and image permissions clearance? Do you possess superior research and communication skills? The Art Canada Institute (ACI) is searching for an Image Research Associate to assist with the production of bilingual online art books and print books written by Canadian art historians and scholars.

As the Image Research Associate, you will be a key member of ACI’s publishing team. Each year, ACI publishes six online art books on the lives and works of significant Canadian artists or thematic publications that review a significant period, style, or geographical region in Canadian art history. Under the supervision of the Executive Editor and Commissioning Editor, the Image Research Associate will collaborate with the author and with the editorial and design team at ACI to ensure books are illustrated with high-quality images of artists’ work, along with contextual and archival images.

The ideal candidate for the Image Research Associate role has a strong knowledge of Canadian art and its history, demonstrates superb attention to detail, and is highly organized. As well, you will possess the ability to manage time effectively and multitask.

Responsibilities

The Image Research Associate will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Research and locate never-before published images with an eye to ensuring that ACI publications have a high level of originality and engaging and informative content.
  • Work closely with all stakeholders, including authors, copyright holders, editorial staff, and the ACI’s web team.
  • Perform significant research into artists’ oeuvres and archives.
  • Maintain highly accurate records of images and correspondence with stakeholders.
  • Fact check and organize the information provided by authors, institutions, and collections.
  • Liaise with all copyright holders to ensure permissions are granted for each image used.
  • Respond within 24 hours to all communication from the ACI team.
  • Deliver at key dates an image list, a captions document, and other documents relevant to the ACI publishing process.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Art History, or other relevant discipline
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian art history
  • Excellent research skills
  • Highly organized and detail focused
  • Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects at one time
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience with copyright and image permissions clearance an asset
  • Experience working in a virtual office environment
  • Experience working in a deadline-oriented environment
  • A strong sense of graphic design and book design
  • An ability to read and correspond in French (not essential but an asset)
