Wage: $18.39 per hour

Full-time (37.5 hrs/week) 8:30AM to 4:30 PM (Occasional overtime, evenings, weekend, and field work will be required).

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Conservation Assistant to join the Conservation and Research team at Assiniboine Park Zoo. The Conservation Assistant will work individually and as part of the team to collect data, assist in the implementation of research and conservation projects, and communicate conservation messages to visitors. Primary duties of the incumbents will include rearing and research on endangered butterflies on-site as part of our grassland butterfly conservation program. Other projects the incumbents will support include: monitoring local bird populations, collecting observational data for animal behaviour projects, and other support of research programs as required. Fieldwork will be required, but most work will occur at the Park and Zoo. The Conservation Assistant will be expected to maintain high standards of accuracy and detail when collecting data. The Conservation Assistant must follow all health and safety legislation, regulations, and policies, and provide extraordinary experiences to our visitors while completing their regular daily activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Completed or currently working towards an undergraduate degree in biology, ecology, or a related field.
  • A keen interest in the natural world, wildlife, and conservation.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Experience in customer service for providing extraordinary experiences to our visitors.
  • Strong attention to detail for data collection.
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace apps.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Candidates must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position (sitting, standing, walking outdoors for long periods of time).

Asset Qualifications

  • Previous experience conducting research in a laboratory or field setting.
  • The ability to speak French and/or other languages.
  • Experience caring for and rearing plants and/or insects.
  • Possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).
