We are currently hiring for Soft Rock Miner Labourers to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario. Deadline to apply is June 13, 2025. Online applications only. Please no hard copies delivered to the site.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
HOW WILL YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM?
Under the direction of the Mine Supervisor and in accordance with the Mine Plan, this position will perform a variety of labour activities to support the safe and efficient extraction, transportation, and processing of the salt material deposit.
- Operate a variety of mining equipment including continuous miners, mobile equipment, roof bolters, and conveyor systems to transport salt from the working face to the surface operations.
- Conduct pre-operational safety checks and follow established safety procedures
- Perform mine support activities such backchecking; scaling loose rock; installing rock supports; and ventilation systems
- Load and transport extracted material to surface or designated areas
- Monitor mine conditions and report any hazards or anomalies to Supervisor
- Comply with all relevant mining and health and safety regulations
- Participate in safety meetings and continuous training programs
- Perform other related duties as required.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?

Minimum of high school diploma or GED
-
Understanding of health and safety and mining safety regulations, practices, and procedures
-
Ability to work independently and/or in a team setting
-
Ability to work at heights (up to 60 feet) is required
-
Ability to work in confined, low-light, and physically demanding environments
-
Ability to lift 50+ lbs and ability to operate machinery with precision. Satisfactory completion of a Post-Offer Pre-Placement assessment is required.

Reliable and punctual
-
Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends
-
Valid Ontario driver’s license
-
Preferred:
-
1-2 years of underground soft rock mining experience
-
Proficiency and previous experience in operating mining machinery and equipment
-
Underground mining common core certificate
-
Basic mechanical aptitude
WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE?
- Must be able to work the necessary shift schedules to support the operations. Shifts may include days, afternoons, midnight.
- Must be able to work underground.
- If you do not live nearby the surrounding area, you will be required to relocate, at your own expense.
