About the role

Job Overview
The Finance Manager enhances the dignity and quality of life of our clients through his/her assumed responsibility for the stewardship of resources, effective management of finance and accounting operations, and its accurate reporting that provide reliable information that will assist Good Shepherd Ministries to respond to the needs of the homeless, disadvantaged and marginalized in our community.

Responsibilities

  • To provide timely and appropriate response to enquiries related to accounting and finance services; and to address all contacts, co-workers, clients, donors, volunteers, and visitors in a hospitable, respectful and professional manner.
  • To manage the day-to-day finance and accounting operations, and direct all phases of the accounting process
  • To develop and implement an effective accounting system; adopt accounting Policies and Procedures applicable to the organization’s operations and activities; and apply generally accepted accounting principles in the recording of financial transactions and reporting of financial statements
  • To develop, recommend, monitor and implement financial and internal controls to safeguard the organization’s financial resources; provide reasonable assurance on the integrity of the accounting data; and ensure the reliability of the organization’s financial reporting system
  • To prepare financial statements that are free from material errors, omissions or misstatements; and to ensure that the financial statements are presented fairly and in a consistent manner in accordance with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles
  • To direct, coach/train, develop and supervise the finance co-workers in general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, audit, financial reporting and other accounting/finance-related functions.
  • To function as a member of the Finance Committee, participate in the financial planning process, execute financial strategies and plans, and implement investment strategies

Skills and Qualifications

  • Actively practices the Mission, Vision, and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries.
  • Completion of a recognized Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, with a minimum of 10 years diversified experience in senior level positions requiring a high degree of technical knowledge, application of practical experience, and independent thinking in accounting and financial management are required; or a CA, CMA, CGA, foreign accountancy designation, or MBA with a minimum of 7 years senior level accounting, auditing or financial management experience obtained after certification
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations and statutory requirements related to the organization’s activities and operations, e.g. Employment Standards Act 2000, Income Tax Act, donations and tax receipts regulations and guidelines, statutory deductions, etc.
  • Proven dependability, sense of fairness, objectivity and competence in the performance of his/her functions.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and motivate co-workers to work towards optimal efficiency within a team-based environment.
  • Strong initiative, results oriented, and ability to make appropriate decisions consistent to the situation.
  • Good business sense and demonstrated ability in providing sound judgement on strategic planning as well as in the formulation and effective execution of financial strategies and plans
  • Experience with ADP and Oracle Netsuite would be an asset
