Job Information
The Senior Policy Analyst works for Housing NWT in Yellowknife and plays a key role in governmental affairs, through business planning and policy development.
They lead projects to create or improve policies and often advise on proposals going to higher-level government offices. The Senior Policy Analyst supports planning and decision-making across the organization.
Reporting to the Manager, Policy and Legislation, the Senior Policy Analyst requires a self motivated candidate who can work independently and can also supervise interns or temporary staff. The Senior Policy Analyst often represents Housing NWT in meetings with other departments, governments, and organizations, especially regarding indigenous relations and legislative and legal affairs.
The Senior Policy Analyst helps ensure that Housing NWT's policies are aligned with the wider government and that everyone is working together effectively. Their work influences not just Housing NWT, but also other government departments and the public.
The role requires knowledge of cabinet processes, policy creation, and legislation. Applicants should understand current relevant legislation agreements, strategies, and policies related to housing in the NWT.
Applicants need to have experience interacting with different government departments, Indigenous groups, communities, and businesses. A background in public administration, political science, economics, and intergovernmental relations is important. Experience with corporate planning principles and methodologies would be an asset.
Strong analytical skills are essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively, whether presenting ideas or analyzing policy options. You'll need to find creative solutions, manage projects, and coordinate teams from different areas.
Research skills are key to staying updated on trends and best practices, and the ability to work well with various stakeholders is important. Applicants should also be comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment, using good judgment, and handling sensitive situations with diplomacy.
Familiarity with basic software like word processors and email programs is required. You'll also be expected to communicate recommendations clearly, both in writing and verbally, to various audiences.
Understanding northern institutions, current political issues, and local communities is valuable, along with a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness in the workplace.
To be successful in this position, you would have completed a bachelor's degree in political science, sociology or other social sciences, with three years of relevant experience.
Or a post-secondary diploma in public/business administration, and a minimum of seven (7) years related work experience; All other equivalencies will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
