Foundations of Health Care Practice
Fall Term 2025, class times are Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12:30-14:00
Location: Fenwick Medical Building
Format: Lecture (synchronous, in-person)
This course introduces students in the BHSc professions to the Canadian Health Care System and the role of the health professional within that system. The course compares the Canadian system to systems from other countries and covers diverse healthcare models such as primary care, palliative care, long term care, etc. The role of the health professional is explored through the study of professionalism, scope of practice, and risk management in an interprofessional context. The course will allow students the opportunity to develop/improve essential skills to help them study and work in a multi-disciplinary system including critical thinking, writing skills, communication and teamwork.
Responsibilities will include all aspects of development of course materials for in-person, synchronous teaching, student evaluation, and administration of the course. Topics include introduction to university study, conceptual models of health and illness, health care systems, models of care, professionalism, communication and the application of research knowledge to practice. The maximum enrolment for this course is 74.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Undergraduate degree in a health profession and a complementary graduate degree are required. Previous teaching experience in a university is required. Knowledge of health services research and critical thinking methods are essential. Excellent organizational and written communication skills are required. Availability for in-person teaching, as posted on the 2025-2026 Academic Timetable (and listed above) is required. Experience with Brightspace or equivalent is considered an asset.
Salary Range/Pay Rate
Per CUPE Collective Agreement
