About the role
As a member of the Produce Department, you play a vital role in delivering a fresh, vibrant, and welcoming shopping experience. Your responsibilities include setting and maintaining attractive produce displays, preparing fresh-cut offerings, and ensuring that all department and store goals—as communicated by the Market Manager and leadership team—are met or exceeded.
This is a customer-focused, service-oriented position that requires a can-do attitude, attention to detail, and a passion for fresh food. You will help maintain a positive company image by providing legendary customer service and supporting the overall success of the produce department.
Duties & Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Set up and maintain clean, well-stocked, and visually appealing produce displays.
- Clean, peel, slice, and trim fruits and vegetables for ready-to-serve offerings.
- Prepare fresh products such as Sunterra’s freshly squeezed juices.
- Operate juicing equipment safely and efficiently; perform routine cleaning and maintenance.
- Receive, unpack, and stock produce shipments.
- Follow all established food safety, sanitation, and cleaning procedures.
- Maintain accurate retail pricing and signage across all produce items.
- Ensure proper product rotation and remove damaged or expired items.
- Oversee product sampling and promote seasonal or featured items.
- Stay informed about new products and assist with their placement and presentation.
- Follow through on all customer questions and requests with professionalism and care.
Supporting Duties
- Assist the Produce Team Lead with all departmental functions as needed.
- Monitor inventory levels and communicate restocking needs.
- Practice proper lifting techniques and safe use of tools and equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of prep areas, tools, and storage spaces.
- Report safety hazards or violations immediately and help maintain department security.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Produce Team Lead or Market Manager.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
Qualifications
- Basic knife skills and comfort with produce prep work.
- Knowledge of fruit and vegetable varieties and seasonality.
- Ability to visually inspect products for quality and freshness.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions and procedures.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- WHMIS and Food Safety Certification required (training provided by Sunterra).
- Previous experience in grocery, produce, or food service is an asset but not required.
Working Conditions
- Standing and/or walking for extended periods of time.
- Exposure to temperature variations and wet conditions in refrigerated and prep areas.
- May walk and work on uneven surfaces.
- Requires reaching above and below shoulder height.
- Repetitive use of hands with power grasping and fine manipulation.
- May require use of ladders or stools to access product or supplies.
- Repetitive stretching and lifting required.
- Lifting of items up to 40 pounds (team lift required for heavier items).
