CAMH Education presents a unique and exciting opportunity for three (3) full-time, permanent TIDES Specialists, who will be involved in the trauma-informed de-escalation education for safety and self-protection (TIDES) training program. It is a CAMH Safe and Well initiative. TIDES blends trauma-informed approaches with collaborative communication strategies and patient-centred care. It focuses on preventative and responsive interventions for psychiatric and behavioural emergencies.

TIDES specialists:

  • Collaborative with stakeholders across CAMH, including clinical and non-clinical (also known as direct and indirect service) staff
  • Design and deliver evidence-based education to drives clinical and social change and to improve the daily experiences of CAMH staff and people living with mental illness in our hospital and communities
  • Provide consultation to address identified gaps within program areas and around specific processes for safely providing the best patient care
  • Provide consultation to develop and implement safety initiatives around quality control and improvement.

TIDES delivers training and consultations in a variety of formats that include:

  • Classroom and virtual delivery
  • Innovative education technologies
  • Outcome measures to ensure continuous quality improvement
  • Simulation-based practice and process.

This position is located at 1001 Queen Street West with travel between CAMH sites.

Job Requirements

  • You must be a university or college graduate in adult education, health science, health promotion, social or behavioural sciences, combined with at least three years of experience with group facilitation and consultation.
  • You must have at least 3 years of experience in facilitating healthcare staff safety education such as Trauma informed de-escalation education for safety and self-protection (TIDES) or a similar program
  • You must have at least three years of experience directly supporting clients/patients in an inpatient or outpatient program. You must bring demonstrated skills and experience as a facilitator of education programs that incorporate:
  • Collaborative individual and team discussions
  • Facilitation and debriefing of simulation activities that support principles of patient-centred care, empathic communications, self-awareness and de-escalation
  • This role will require teaching and demonstrating physical intervention curriculum (self-protection team control and restraint application), which involves physical capabilities.
  • You have demonstrated assessment and consultation skills related to environmental factors, organizational policies and protocols and procedures to promote safety of staff and patients.
  • Knowledge of evaluation and research best practices is an asset.
