JOB SUMMARY
The Welding Technician/Engineer is responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of duties and responsibilities as outlined below in accordance with AGS' cultural priorities.
The duties and responsibilities listed below are not meant to be all-encompassing. As business needs change, this list may be adapted. It is expected that the incumbent will participate in meetings, on teams and projects to collectively achieve our priorities.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Reporting to the Engineering Assistant Manager, the Welding Tech/Engineer is responsible for, but not limited to: providing specifications and/or designs for new or modified welding equipment, providing support for plant equipment, leading and participating in cost savings initiatives, and completing projects adhering to budgets and time constraints.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Perform all tasks with safety in mind. Take responsibility as a competent person under Section 27 of the OSHA for the safety and wellbeing of employees on shift.
- Adherence to Procedures and Instructions. All designs and specifications are to meet or exceed current CSA or ANSI codes.
- Analyze and solve technical problems through the application of engineering principles.
- Assist in the specification of manufacturing operations and processes.
- Ensure all welds meet or exceed customer standards.
- Optimize weld processes and equipment efficiencies as needed.
- Maintain and backup(store) weld programs and settings.
- Investigate new technology that can aid in weld optimization and cost savings initiatives.
- Work closely with stakeholders on various projects, completing them on time while adhering to budgets and time constraints.
- Support Production department as required and assist Production in tracking and resolving issues related to welding machines.
- Use and maintain documentation, inventory, and systems to ensure welding efficiency is recorded.
- Perform any other duties that may be specifically or generally assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3 year advanced diploma in Manufacturing Welding Engineering Robotic Technology
- A well-organized approach to problem solving, good record keeping skills as well as the ability to follow instructions and procedures would be an asset.
- Ability to understand procedures, technical terms, safety requirements, and scheduling priorities in order to achieve objectives.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, to work with all levels of staff in the resolution of problems and activities.
- Ability to complete assignments with minimum supervision and initiate actions within the scope of authority.

AGS’s main business is the supply of bumper impact system assemblies and complex high value added metal components. AGS has capabilities in stamping, plating, coatings, welding, engineering and design, and sequencing and assembly. Founded in 1947, with 8 facilities in Canada and the US and with over 154,219m2 of manufacturing floor space.
AGS has a distinctive expertise in chrome plating impact beams. AGS’s impact beams consistently exceed appearance and corrosion resistance standards and have an unsurpassed warranty record. In addition, continued investment in chrome plating R&D has enabled AGS to deliver superior quality, corrosion resistance and material reductions to its customers. AGS also has e-coat and zinc line facilities which provide corrosion protection to metallic parts which are not chrome plated.
AGS also has considerable know-how in stamping complex parts. AGS has more than 135 stamping presses in its facilities, with capacity up to 2500T, including tandem, transfer and progressive presses, many with very large beds to accommodate large parts. A sampling of AGS’s stamped products includes bumper impact system components, cross members, oil pans, control arms, hitches, pillars, beams and frame assemblies.
AGS also has particular skill in welding, including MIG, resistance and drawn arc, and has developed highly automated, flexible welding equipment to help reduce cycle time and improve yields and efficiency.
