About the role

Overview:

Alberta Bible College (ABC) is hiring a Student Development Dean to oversee the delivery of student services “that address diverse student needs, abilities, and cultures regardless of location or instructional modality” (ABHE Standard 9, Essential Element 2).

This includes nurturing an educational environment that encourages students in both our College and PACE programs to grow holistically (spiritually, physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially).

This is a full-time position (30 hours per week). The rate of pay is $30 per hour. These hours must be worked on campus between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Alberta Bible College is located at: 635 Northmount Drive NW, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Qualifications

The successful applicant should possess a minimum of a master’s degree in the field of Christian ministry (e.g., Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Theology, Counselling, Higher Education, etc.). Some professional experience in campus or church ministry is an asset but not required.

Responsibilities

The Student Development Dean initiates strategies and manages resources to maximize the opportunity for students’:

Spiritual Formation

  • Coordinates ABC chapel program (College program). This includes crafting the annual chapel theme, speaker/musician selection, and student chapel team development.
  • Organizes PACE Community Night on the first Tuesday of each PACE block.
  • Plans College program prayer retreat (in conjunction with the College student leadership team).
  • Coordinates College program’s Community Praying of the Psalms (Monday-Friday).
  • Provides spiritual guidance to students as appropriate.

Physical Well-being

  • Coordinates the collection, organization, and distribution of food for ABC’s Community Kitchen.
  • Supports students in finding suitable housing as needed.
  • Oversees the development of ABC’s campus Fitness Centre.
  • Coaches out-of-province and international students on provincial health insurance coverage.
  • Ensures campus first aid kits are stocked, advertised, and publicly available.
  • Participates on the Campus Safety Committee.

Intellectual Growth

  • Coordinates new student orientation events (College and PACE) and serves as a faculty member for ABC 101 and PACE 101.
  • Works in conjunction with the Academic Dean, Registrar, Librarian, and Academic Coach to foster student success and offer supports where needed.
  • Processes requests for Student Accommodations in conjunction with the Academic Dean.
  • Participates on the Student Retention Committee.

Emotional Health

  • Organizes mental wellness workshops as part of College and PACE orientation initiatives.
  • Serves as ABC’s point person in the college’s partnership with local counselling agencies, who place graduate counselling/psychology interns to provide mental health support to the ABC community.
  • Refer students to community resources as needed.
  • Participate on the Suicide Prevention Committee.
  • Organizes suicide prevention training for student leaders and Student Development volunteers.
  • Supervises ABC’s volunteer Grievance Advocate (in alignment with ABC’s Grievance Policy).

Social Development

  • Plans Orientation Week recreation event prior to fall semester.
  • Oversees weekly Community Lunches in coordination with ABC alumni association.
  • Coordinates student photos for Populi.
  • Provides support to college households as requested.
  • Creates awareness of, and promotes alignment with, the college’s Community Rule of Life amongst students.
  • Leads the organization and execution of the ABC Christmas party.
  • Coordinates ABC’s annual Celebration & Recognition Evening.

Leadership Development

  • Creates co-curricular opportunities for students to develop their leadership and ministry skills.
  • Selects members for College program student leadership teams.
  • Plans and leads student leader retreats (August/January).
  • Serves as a resource and guide for student body financial budgeting, initiatives, and events. This includes recruiting a qualified individual to review the student body’s financial records each year.
  • Works with student chapel leader(s) in planning, executing, and evaluating weekly chapel gatherings (College program).
  • Works with student photographer team (if applicable) to ensure all appropriate College program, PACE, and ABC events receive photography coverage so that the life of the community is celebrated, promoted, and archived.

Other:

  • Conducts Entrance Conversations with College students as they enter the ABC community.
  • Works with ABC’s President to coordinate fireside chats each semester for both College and PACE students.
  • Oversees communication to students including:
  1. Community Life Guide
  2. Relevant pages on college website
  3. PowerPoint announcements in Student Centre and Hallway screens
  4. Summer information letter to students (June, August)
  5. Internal social media groups
  • Creates student awareness of various ABC policies including the Active Shooter Policy, Student Accommodation Policy, Harassment Policy, and Grievance Policy.

  • Spearheads ABC’s annual Student Satisfaction Survey.

  • Assesses Student Development initiatives through ABC’s annual May Assessment plan.

  • Provides awareness of student needs to staff and faculty as appropriate.

  • Develops and manages the Student Development budget.

  • Regularly maintains and edits the Student Development Handbook

  • Maintains best practices as per the Association of Biblical Higher Education and other colleges/professional organizations (See Standard 9 (Student Development and Success) of the Association of Biblical Higher Education’s Institutional Accreditation Standards.)

  • Holds membership with the Christian Association for Christians in Student Development (CACSD) and participates in regional and national conferences as possible.

  • Meets weekly with the Student Development Team members (as applicable).

  • Meets weekly with the President’s Cabinet.
